Is the Star Wars SAGA force system generic enough to port to Modern?

I'd think so. The essense of force powers is
1) Spent a feat (Force Sensitivity) to be able to use the Force, and do some minor tricks
2) Spend another feat (Force Training) to learn 1 + Wis modifier Force Powers, which can be used 1/encounter (you can take the same power more than once)
3) Activating powers is based on the Use the Force skill

Subsitute magic / psionics for Force (and spellcraft / psicraft for Use the Force) and you've got a pretty workable system that really makes more sense for a modern game ala Heroes or Buffy than just chopping the top 4 levels off of D&D magic/psi and throwing in an oddball freeform magic system in incantations.

The skill-based mechanics (stripped of any Star Wars IP trappings) can easily port to d20 Modern. Anyone who owns Green Ronin's Psychic's Handbook can testify it's doable.

Besides, I never did like the Vancian System for d20 Modern. Even I'm getting tired of it in D&D.

Well, if 4E is really like SWSE, you wouldn't need that much to make a Modern variation. New and/or tweaked classes, a couple of pages of gear and vehicle stats, and you'd be good to go really. Heck, take out the force powers and aliens and SWSE could run a modern game perfectly well as written.

Exactly my thinking. Already working on updating the Buck Rogers XXVc game to run like this. Maybe add an Expert class to cover medic, engineer, and academic talent trees.
