[D20 Modern] A perverse idea

After reading the preview for Modern and how it was hailed as being able to do anything I had the idea, 'what about a fantasy game'? I know, I know. But I think I will try it when I get my hands on that book. Of course, I don't run hack-and-slash so I think it will work. Just sharing my masochistic thoughts with everyone.

A lot of stories feature gifted young characters who are thrust out into the big wide world and have to develop into heroes. In some cases, starting out in D20 Modern base classes might give a better sense of this than low levels of D&D classes do. I like the idea of a group of adventurers just being the village scrappy guy, flashy guy, earnest gal and clever so-and-so who by default have to take on some mission and eventually become legendary figures. Which is odd, because I don't normally go for that sort of thing. For some reason, the looser class system (or really, my far-to-early impression of it) makes the idea of playing more traditional fantasy more palatable.

I'll be looking at it for possible use in a Spelljammer or Planescape campaign.
 

i'm with you.

i'll definitely be picking up d20 Modern, and based on how much i like the rules, i may end up adapting the D&D world i'm currently working on to use that instead. or perhaps some weird mish-mash of the two.

the other campaign idea i have for d20 Modern is to do an In Nomine d20 conversion.

Not a perverse idea at all. I'm working on a 3.5E player guide for the games I play in. Revamping the weapon lists, planning to replace Ranger, Bard & Sorcerer with variant versions of Monte's, tweaking the Monk to be a streamlined version incorporating the OA rules, rewriting the Psion to include near all the optional stuff out there to some degree, and flat out just making one reference source for classes.

After Modern comes out, I may move into 3.75E. My group and I are very interested in the possibility of armor giving DR and creating classes from more open and generic templates. Many times character concepts start with people ripped out of their normal lives... kinda hard to explain why they have all this training as a warrior... and even when you can, what about the rest of their life, and it's benefits to the character... bah...

Anyway, I think it's a perfectly reasonable idea, and I plan on looking into it myself.

G'day

I don't think your idea is perverse at all. I run most of my fantasy games using a slightly-modified set of SF rules called 'ForeSight'.

You might even find that the change to a blander set of rules will make the players see the fantasy again, if they have been concentrating mor on the character classes for a while.
