[D20 Modern] Advanced Class: Eldritch Soul

First Post
Hi Everyone,

I'd love some feedback on a new Advanced class that my girlfriend and I have created for use in the Under the Eclipse campaign. It has similarities to the D&D Sorcerer class, but has enough distinct changes to make it stand on its own.

We made it to stand on equal footing with the other spellcasting classes from D20 Modern.

Some notes on class creation balance:

- We gave the class two good saving throw bonuses to help counteract the lack of skill points, reputation bonus, hit dice and defensive bonuses.

- The Safeguard and Enhanced Senses abilities were created to help differentiate this class even more from Mages (and inadvertantly, from Wizards or Sorcerers). With no familiar, alchemy or item creation, these abilities work out as a good trade off.

- We've strived to "cover our asses" in the ability descriptions so that people don't misinterpret how they work. If anyone needs any clarification, please let us know so that we can have the clearest text possible.

- We decided to use Wisdom for the casting statistic even though Sorcerer's normally use Charisma (remember, although there are some similarities, this isn't just a retread of the Sorcerer class). The perception based skills that reflect the character's outlook are all centered around Wisdom (Sense Motive, Spot and Listen), so we switched it over. Even though they both use Wisdom, the Eldritch Soul is different enough from the Acolyte to keep the two distinct.

- Instinctual Casting replaces Spell Mastery. It's a way to give a Spell Mastery-type advantage to the character, beyond what they can already do (cast without preparing spells beforehand).

- Note that there's a new feat included at the end of the pdf. It's an arcane equivalent to Wild Talent (D20 Modern page 362) and allows arcane wannabes a way to get some minor spellcasting in early without screwing up game balance.

Blood, sweat and tears went into it. We hope you enjoy it. Feel free to use it in your campaigns, as per the OGL:

Not too bad, I think it's a little strong though. Use Magic Device doesn't seem to fit as well, and I'd suggest lowerer the reflex save to the medium progression.

The prerequites are interesting and I'm not sure what the conection with being aware and having magic drawn to you are.

In terms of powers and abilities, we tried to make sure it wasn't more powerful than the Mage or Acolyte. In many ways, this class is a bit weaker. Considering that the Mage has a familiar, item creation, alchemy abilities and more skill points... the higher save isn't that big a bonus. The Acolyte's got two kick ass saving throw columns as well as a half-decent hit die and BAB. In comparison to both of the other spell-slingers, the Eldritch Soul doesn't seem out of line, stat wise.

We thought of the awareness in terms of being aware of your surroundings and inadvertantly being aware of "something more" in the world. We wanted to give a sense that magic is beyond normal perception (especially in the way D20 Modern presents it), and what-not. An Eldritch Soul's awareness is what has helped them to "see" magic around them and instinctually take hold of it. It obviously doesn't mean that every character with high Wisdom and observatory skills (Sense Motive, Spot, Listen) is magically oriented, it's just common ground for this class.

Use Magic Device isn't like a Rogue or Occultist tinkering with an item until it works. We figure it would play out in game more as the magic of the item "responding" to the Eldritch Soul if a successful roll was made. The same skill and mechanics rules-wise, but a different role-playing view of it in game.

On each part of the Advanced Class, we strived to make sure it wasn't a power class, was balanced and yet it had something new to offer.

I appreciate your honest critique.

You have to admit though... I posted at 11 minutes after the hour and you responded at 19 past. Reading my post, downloading the pdf, reading it, comparing it to the D20 Modern Advanced Classes, passing judgement on it and responding to my post in less than 10 minutes is a bit fast... :)

Hopefully playing the class in-game would give you a better chance to see how it balances out.

I'm disappointed. Oh well, I hope people are downloading the pdf and enjoying it.
