[d20 Modern] Cooking: what skill to use?

There's a Craft (culinary) skill in [pimp]The Qalashar Device which "allows a character to create meals, dishes, desserts and other food creations."[/pimp]

You want to know a secret? It's cobbled together from already existing Craft skills. Now you know, I'm so ashamed.

If the character is just all about cooking, craft. If they want to run a restaurant, profession.

Craft and Profession don't work that way in d20 Modern.

Unless you want them to of course. :)

I'll just restate that Craft (good eats) is the way to go.

craft (good eats) is the skill taken by the crew and staff of a television show on the food network.

alton rocks!!

Cook is specifically listed as a type of Profession. So are the related fields -- apothecary (cooker of medicines), brewer (cooker of beer), herbalist, and innkeeper.

Check out the definition for Profession:
"While a Craft skill represents ability in creating or making an item, a Profession skill represents an aptitude in a vocation requiring a broader range of less specific knowledge. To draw a modern analogy, if an occupation is a service industry, it's probably a Profession skill. If it's in the manufacturing sector, it's probably a Craft skill."

Careful!

Craft and Profession work very differently in d20 modern.

Rather than having stuff like Craft(Swordsmithing) and Craft(pottery), It's subdivided into engineering disciplines: Craft(Mechanical), Craft(Chemical), and so forth.

Profession on the other hand, is a skill that represents how much money you make at your job rather than what job(s) you can do. Your job itself is represented by an occupation, which you pick at character creation.

Honestly though, the modern ruleset discourages new skill subcategories, and for a good reason. Honestly, the only reason someone will take Craft(Cook) is for flavor reasons, and somebody who cares about their character concept enough to burn their skill points like that really doesn't deserve the penalty. Instead, why not just say "this character is a good cook", the same way we say "this character has brown hair"? And if you feel some specific incident of cookery is significant enough to warrant a die roll, just use a straight int or wis check.

I would completely agree, save for the fact that there are Craft (visual art), Craft (writing), which--to me--indicates that a certain amount of flavour in character building is reflected in the existing rules. Further, I would say that Craft (culinary) is not far removed from these two flavour Crafts, if you'll excuse the pun.

But, too each his/her own. YMMV.

Take care all!
