[d20 Modern] Defense and Armor/Shields

You could shave off two points of Defense easily.

First, I don't know or care what Urban Arcana says, but you shouldn't let a Chain Shirt give him +4 Defense.

In D20 Modern core, light armor gives you only +3 Defense, at max. If he wants +4 Defense, make him pay a feat.

Second, FX items always start breaking the game. Did he pay a feat for that +1 armor? Did he make it himself? If the answer to both of those are no, the magic bonus should be taken away.

Mind you, that only removes two points of Defense, but that shouldn't be too bad. I suggest having someone rush and trip him, preferably a Strong/Dedicated Hero ^^

I have the same problem IMC. I have a Tough 3/Daredevil 6... he started as a Tough 3/Daredevil 4 and had a Defense of 24 (high Dex, two armor feats with a tactical vest).

He has a low attack bonus, though, and frequently uses his Hummer in combat instead.

One time he got tossed into jail and was, of course, stripped of all his gear and given prison clothes. He lost 5 of 7 of his feats that way... and one of those feats was Two-Weapon Fighting. Of course, he still had a Defense of 19, so he survived the inevitable brawl. Barely.

I've tossed him into pools containing pirhanas, tripped him (+4 to melee attacks) and even once had someone grapple him and pull the pin of a super-grenade on him! I don't suggest the latter, as Telepaths rarely have much in the way of hit points. (I only did that to him because he has a massive number of hit points and a good MDT... and with Action Boost as a daredevil ability and a Fort save of +10, he'll only fail his MDT on a roll of 1.) I've also made sure he felt the speed and skill penalties, especially the former as it's always there.

Yea, I was going to run a Future game. I had "d20 Futu ..." out of my mouth and three people said: "I want heavy subcutaneous armor!"

A D20 Modern-based game system should not have +8 "magic" items balanced only by Wealth. It doesn't work.

I'm in a D20 Future game and so many people abused the rule, the GM dropped all but the light bonus. Even so, all but one of the original characters (that being me) took the free +3 Defense anyway.

Shields (including the police riot shields) are found in the ArcanaEquipment.rtf of the MSRD.
Ah. My thanks for pointing this out. No matter how well I think I know that document, there's always something in there that surprises me...

Also, some of the heavier shields used by tactical squads work more like D&D tower shields: police use them for cover (and thus, the officer using it would benefit from a miss chance rather than a Defense bonus).

Minor correction - cover doesn't give you a miss chance, it gives a defence bonus as per normal. Miss chances basically come from concealment (so hide behind a bush instead!)

Cheers
