D20 Modern: Has Wizard stopped caring about it?

I think it's been put on the back burner while 4e is getting all the attention, but I don't think it's something that WotC has given up on. I just think they've got more pressing matters to attend to for the meantime.

Given the success of the D&D Minis and the Star Wars Minis product lines, I'd love to see one or two sets released annually for a D20 Modern Minis product line.

There are a lot of modern games out there that have no mini support, so a line of Modern minis, ranging from the urbane to the arcane, would likely sell very well, and not just with D20 Modern players. I could see minis chosen because they fit well with multiple themes, such as the World of Darkness series, Call of Cthulhu and its variants, Spycraft and other espionage RPGs, Shadowrun, etc. It would not be hard to come up with a list of commons and uncommons that are generic enough to have appeal across multiple modern systems, and leave the rares for D20 Modern iconics. Doing that would increase the appeal of the product line to more than just the fans of D20 Modern, and thus attract new customers to the WOTC miniatures product lines.

I have to admit, if they went with a Modern minis line, I'd be all over it, just because I could use them in so many of my games, not just the WOTC ones.

Other than that, I understand that D20 Modern will be getting an upgrade to the 4E rules probably a year after 4E is coming out. It's in the FAQ thread over on the WOTC boards.

I don't think you'll see a d20 modern 2nd edition. I don't really know how well it sold for wotc but I feel it's perceived as somewhat of a failure compared to D&D and StarWars.

I think you might see a modern or sci-fi setting using d20/4th edition based rules, but I don't think they will attempt a generic book again. It will be something with specific setting or an IP.

That's just my gut feeling...

Which will be, IMO, totally awesome.

I love d20Modern and all of the 3rd Party work it has spawned. That 4E will have an OGL suggests, then, that d20Modern v2 will have an OGL, and that work can continue in the 3P market. If we see a lot of the major improvements to the system made by the OGL publishers taken forward into v2, it will (I think) just serve to increase the game.

After d20Mv2 we'll have a whole new wave of products and improvements to make it even better.

I seem rather chipper about this whole "New Editions" thing.

I think he means 3rd party.

I don't think there is such a thing as 2nd party d20 books. If I apply the definition of that term from console game development, that would be Wizards bankrolling a 3rd party company to release a game to their specifications for a fee, with Wizards releasing the final game and reaping the profits.

Though if a Wizards exec is reading this, I will glady take a year off to develop a GI Joe game for you for the low price of... heck, who am I kidding, just tell me how much I have to pay YOU and be done with it....

Second party would be "write your own damn sourcebook, fanboy!"

While I'm not a big fan of the WotC d20 settings, I think a case could be made for Urban Arcana being a good concept for a minis line. I think there's an appealing line of minis there. But aside from... Victorian characters, cyberpunk characters, modern dudes with .45s, etc., are a good idea for a minis product, as it doesn't matter from a roleplaying perspective what that mini was called. I think having a good source of minis would vastly improve the popularity of sci-fi, crossover, and historical d20 games.
