d20 Modern idea --- Extreme Dark Matter

That's not what I'd really call it. But I just saw "Blade II" and was thinking about how much I enjoy action-oriented games. And then I read a Destroyer novel...

I've been threatening my friends with some modern-day pulp ideas. And I figure, why start from scratch, or recycle old Doc Savage plots? Why not use that beautiful Dark Matter book that never got played, but think John Woo instead of Chris Carter?

I figure, start the PCs high enough in level so they can all be competent investigators or scientists BUT have enough levels left over to take a few levels of Martial Artist (to represent their training in an obscure but lethal Tibetan school of kung fu).

If there are rumors of alien abductions, they go check it out, interview the abductees, the usual...but by the end of the adventure, they are going Iron Monkey on the Grey mothership.

When I do the Loch Ness Monster adventure...damn it, someone is going to ride that thing.

As a big Buckaroo Banzai fan, I love the idea of a theoretical physicist and a xenobiologist carrying 12-gauge shotguns and dealing harshly with otherdimensional invaders.

Anyway...food for thought...

Sounds like the GURPS supplement Black Ops....Cool...The CIA running around with top secret gauss rifles and man portable 30mm cannons....Kicking the butt off of Mind flayers...

I hadn't thought about GURPS Black Ops --- but you're right. Only difference is that these heroes will be more like the Challengers of the Unknown than MiBs --- although I'd love to have some MiB's from various agencies floating around, too.

Delta Green meets SpyCraft meets Pulp d20.

Sounds like a hoot!

And your selection of using Dark Matter, that's perfect.
I keep feeling that they(WotC) need to update/convert Dark Matter to d20, which with either CoCd20 or Shadowchasers is quite possible.

And a hoot it shall be...if I can get the players on board.

Dark Matter is one of my all-time favorite settings. It would be great if the license and previously-released materials were farmed out to some smaller company, and tweaked for d20 Modern.

The high-energy feel and quirky characterizations of the old pulps are still great...but some of the other elements of pulp, like the Oriental Mastermind or the Lord of the Jungle or the Lost World, are sort of tired.

I figure, take some modern ideas --- the nanotech-powered sandmen, the Greys, various secret government conspiracies, global terrorism, corporate warfare, the post-Cold War New World Order --- or find some new takes on the old ideas --- how would Communist China handle a Fu Manchu-type character? How are the Seven Immortal Masters of Shangri-La dealing with occupied Tibet? Do nuclear explosions allow ultraterrestrials to sneak in to our plane?

Anyway...the X-Files with Doc and Indy instead of Mulder and Scully.

JPL if you get the game started let us know how it goes.

Will do.

Man, I can hardly wait for d20 Modern. It's about time d20 came out of the dungeon and onto the streets...

It's already out on the street for some time. Check out Spycraft.

If you're referring to Wizards' product line, then check out Call of Cthulhu.

I have CoC, but I think I'd like a "Real world" setting where the good guys still have more character options.

I admit, I'm biased towards WotC products.

In fact...I guess I'm looking for GURPS d20, more or less.
