D20 Modern interview - Anthony Valterra

Horacio mentioned that there are a number of modern/futuristic settings already out there, not related to WotCs d20 Modern project. I think he is correct if he drops the 'modern' half, because the only modern game that meets that definition is Malls and Morons.

If there are some other d20 games set in a contemporay era, I'd appreciate being pointed in their direction.

You may be right. I don't think there are any truly contemporary settings out there. If D20 Modern is going to be like Alternity then it'll be useable for futuristic and contemporary settings though. Maybe after it's release we'll see some third party modern settings.

I think we missed something

I'm interested in seeing if d20 Modern will use Challege Codes, via Star Wars and Wheel of Time, or Challege Ratings as in DND.

d20 modern

The interview w/ Mr. Valterra was interesting. I look forward to WotC's d20 modern gamebook. I currently don't play any d20-based games but I am intrigued by this system and it's popularity.

I've looked at the D&D Player's Handbook and found it interesting but I was always of the mind that the d20 system, as it appears in the D&D books, seemed better suited for fantasy RPGs than modern or sci-fi RPGs.

For modern or sci-fi RPGs I like the Alternity system. It's flexible for any campaign and covers just about anything PCs or GMs might want to do w/ a modern or sci-fi campaign. I was disappointed that WotC cancelled Alternity but learned it was for lack of sales, not b/c they didn't think it was a good system.

From Valterra's interview, it seems the WotC has concluded that the current d20 D&D system is not the best suited for modern-setting RPGs. I agree w/ them on that at least. It does seem some of the changes they are making to d20 will make it more like Alternity....Very interesting.

it seems the WotC has concluded that the current d20 D&D system is not the best suited for modern-setting RPGs.

Having seen d20 games that handle modern-era tasks quite well, I disagree.

Why is a new rules system necessary when extant games show it isn't?

I think this will help out the industry a lot. By coming up with the definitive standard for modern rules and releasing it as OGC, the d20 industry will have more options to explore in creating new and interesting worlds.

Did D20 Modern help modern and future RPG gaming a lot?

Does D20 Modern = Alternity d20?

Did you play D20 Modern before you first played 3rd/3.5 edition D&D?

Holy thread necromancy, Batman! I haven't seen a bunch of those people here for years.... especially that Eric Noah guy. I wonder what ever became of him.
