[d20 Modern] Trying to make up my mind about this one-shot

There's a small chance BNF 2 will be done by then. But the small product I am doing should definitely be done by then.

Maximum...
Security...
Prison.
There, I said it, and Im not taking it back.

All righty then... will you just STOP with the teasing already?!? :p

I was intruiged by your nefarious hints to this top secret eyes-only super-duper confidential project in other threads, then you go out and actually give a quick peek under the wrapper, and I'm now chomping at the bit to get a look at something that I know exactly 3 words about. :)

And like Pierce said, we've done 1) and 2), and a pulpy-WWII-Supers occasional campaign (thanks again Chuck for the wonderful Vigilance product to work with in this) which has it's own Story Hour now, and I echo his comments on the above campaign models.

Here is something you can think about also; in D&D I did a several session one-off that was essentially a small crew of career criminals working in a large city similar to Renaissance Venice, only darker. They weren't psychos, just working cracksmen, thugs, etc. To keep it easy and light, each session they would roll a die to get a random 'mission' or job to do. I tried to string a little story behind the jobs to help add a touch of continuity and mystery, but basically they had great fun running about and doing not-so-nice things to even worse people than they were. I've thought of doing a Modern slant on that, basically a Soprano's campaign, and thought it would be great fun; run a crew that takes orders from an underboss to do relatively mundane tasks and occasionally gets caught in the middle of something bad.

lol. Can't blame a guy for a little guerilla marketing can you?

Ok, so you probably can :)

The mini book is going to be a mini-prison sourcebook (with police classes, feats and campaign models), along with a map of a maximum security prison, and NPC statblocks.

But keep that under your hat.

I trust that we are all mature enough to avoid obvious jokes such as, "Dropping the soap triggers an attack of opportunity."

That would be uncivilized.

Lol.

Being in prison is only one of 1000 options for the book- playing US Marshalls and tracking down escaped prisoners, playing special ops and stopping a full scale riot, being guards are also covered in the campaign models.

For a small product the goal is to make it very open ended- usable over a long period or a short period.

Wow, I just had a great idea for a guest director's Medallions episode... have the PC's visiting the prison to question someone when a full-blown riot breaks out, and see what they do when all their bang-bang sticks are locked well away from them when people start busting loose. Hmmm.... Pierce if you are reading this, well I guess it's too late to tell you not to :)

Bada bing.

That's close to one of the prison riot scenarios in the book (mine was PCs are US Marshalls picking up a prisoner for transport).

But the book's goal is to be open ended, providing a really cool location for Modern games, whether its one game, or as a recurring location in game. (For instance US Marshalls have as one of their jobs trasporting dangerous prisoners, so they might go there on a regular basis).

And of course I did some new classes for the book as well (US Marshalls Special Operations Group, Banger, Bureau of Prisons Special Operations and Response Team).

Im pretty much done, waiting on map and NPCs and it should be good to go.

Ya know, normally it's good form to put the spoiler warning *BEFORE THE THING YOU'RE TRYING TO KEEP SECRECT*.

Ahem.

Heh.

Well, as someone who is using this little mini in my campaign right now (sans map) is that my players KNOW there is going to be a riot at some point (I guess they noticed me twirling my mustache)... but they sure dont know WHEN. *MUAHAHAHHAHA*

Ahem

Here's a rough sketch of the team leader for my modern pulp idea...

Jonathan Quirk, Ph.D.
Strong Hero 2 / Smart Hero 2 / Jeet Kune Do Master 2 / Special Forces [Communications] 5 / Field Scientist 5

Son of Green Beret officer killed at the end of the Vietnam War, Jon Quirk was a child prodigy, taking college-level classes by the age of 14, as well as an excellent martial artist and athlete. At age eighteen, after completing his M.S., he enlisted in the Army in honor of his late father, and soon found himself a commissioned officer in the Green Berets. As a Captain, he led a team through Desert Storm and its aftermath.

Resigning his commission soon after the Gulf War, Quirk returned to school, completing his Ph.D. in theoretical physics. Quirk is currently a researcher and consultant whose expertise is called upon by governments and private corporations dealing with unusual technological or scientific challenges. His extraordinary intellect and considerable experience in dangerous field operations make him a formidable opponent.

Well, duh, it's not like you wouldnt have figured it out when I found a way to get you all to visit the Talladega Federal Penetentiary and then pulled out the 3'x3' color *map* of it, especially when my character Willie would have found a *very* good reason not to go... :D

Plus, I'm so fascinated/horrified by what OldDrewId has in store for us that I dont think I'm going to offer to do a guest director spot for a while. Especially since every time he gets a little time out of the chair he recharges his creative batteries and comes back with the 300lb Aryan Brotherhood cellmate of mind-:D :D :D :D 's.

Vig, I like your GM style there, sounds like you can be a real RBDM when you want to be, which is a good thing.

JPL, I like the stats on the team leader. Very cool. He would probably hurt a little on the BAB because of all the classes, but I'm sure he would make up for it in other areas.
