I totally agree, download the trial version and play with the tutorials... I'm all self taught this way.

One bit of advice if I may, try to use as little 'bitmap images' as possible as Flash doesn't like them very much, it makes the file size larger and they usually get pixelated... Flash is a Vector based program so if you can draw it in Adobe Illustrator you can import it in Flash.
