Insert Homer Simpson-like drooling sounds here...

(THREAD-JACKING!)

EDIT - In regards to Horacio's comment, I know that the Internet has done more to put designers in touch with their target audience than any other communications medium in history. The very fact that Industry pro's like Gygax, Cook, Mona, Collins, Grubb, Kuntz, et. al. can and DO connect with their audience in such a manner is absolutely mind-boggling to me. They reach gamers that way, some companies have picked up new talent that way, and for Joe or Jane Gamer, it puts a human face on former godlike figures.

On the down-side, it makes it all too easy to throw disparaging personal remarks their way, and drown out signal with a lot of insulting noise. It also means that they get e-mail 2 days after the product is released, slamming them because of mistakes in the product, and wanting errata post-haste.

Fan-gushing aside, the fact that I would one day correspond with Gary Gygax on gaming info would have blown my juvenile mind 20 years ago. :D

I for one am looking forward to this. I never got into Spelljammer and I'm looking at this as a chance to see part of what it was all about. The whole idea of magical ships in space is very interesting to say the least. In fact I absolutely love the idea of having a new mini-setting in every Poly/Dungeon. I'm going to have to get myself a subscription and soon.

I always though the Apparatus of Kuwalish matched with a Helm would have made an interesting "fighter" class Spelljamming ship. I always imagined "Kuwalish" to be some kind of "Arcane" ("now Mercane") inventer. I would love to see a whole line of manned constructs used for war/defence.

On the note of overhauling mechanics:

I think that instead of Phlogestion or crystal spheres it would be better to have a some sort of "Shadow Gate"

By use of the Shadow gates in some solar systems, a Spelljamming crew could then access the shadow plane, and then have access to the outer and interplanes, as well as differant worlds that don't follow the same cosmology. (i.e. trveling from Oerth to Fearun) Planescape has had flying ships that can access differant planes. I would think that it would be a simple bonding of two champaign styles.

The Pirates of Gith could Plane Shift (or something similar) their ships into the Astral plane. How about smoething similar to that?

The Appartus of Kwalish (where did kwalish come from? Gary?) idea is cool, but didn't small ships like elven flitters fill that role already?

Spelljammer 2E was a wonderful setting, about the only flaw I was anoid at was the siphoning of a spellcasters spell. Other flaws are like ships that stated they are 40 tons, but when it comes time to count really volume they only 4 tons tops, ie. Mindspider ship or the Whale ship which is 124 tons --- tonnage being 100 cubic yards.
Hopefully Spelljammer D20 (that which this thread is all about) will be more consistent and fair. In the spirit of 3E I hope Helms are a created item that can be destroyed no more easier than any other item. After all making them all nearly indestructable would mean a whole lot of 'artifacts' found nearly everywhere in wildspace (if it is still called wildspace in SJ D20).
I Did find it ODD that the Offical Site and List not hear of it first, an oversite that has some people 'angry' (not know a better word to choose other than angry).
I will reserve any further comments till the Dungeon/Polyhedron comes out and I have a chance to read it over.

I like the idea about plane shifting in form the Astral plane. Hey Erik, you should be writing this stuff down. :p

<very minor spoiler>
I just got Lord of the Iron Fortess. I was just imaging a hammership sailing from cube to cube.

This stuff should be merged. they both have this sort of wacky cosmology. They shouldn't be the opposite sides of the spectrum, they should be together. The planes are just as infinitly large as space, both are beging to be explored. Let's get them together.
