Firstly, I know this is kinda publisher list related, and I did post there originally, but its brought up an interesting point for debate regarding D20M.

We've been running a poll on our website (www.malladinsgate.com), asking people which D20M product they'd like us to publish first. One of the lines we intend to develop is a standard class splat book line for the D20M basic classes.

We've grouped the classes together into pairs for the book design (mainly due to some cool ideas about multiclassing we want to explore in the lines), so there's a book for Strong and Fast Heroes, one for Smart and Charismatic and another for Tough and Dedicated heroes.

However, what has surprised me is that no-one whatsoever has voted for Tough and Dedicated heroes! Does no-one like these classes? Personally these are my two favourite classes in the game (My least favourites are Strong and Charismatic).

So, everyone, what are your favourite classes? Why do you think there are no votes for Tough and Dedicated?

i voted dedicated. i think this is a great class with a lot of potential

one thing that has bothered me though...i created a dedicated hero to be a doctor in a Modern game that will (hopefully) start in January. it occured to me that other than the medical miracles the Field Medic AdC gets, my PC would be better off staying dedicated for as long as possible to get all of the talents he can from the Insightful and Healing talent trees. the Medical Specialist bonuses don't quite stack up to Skill Emphasis and Faith (and Cool Under Pressure - which is a must-have for anyone with the Treat Injury skill)

If it was a multi-vote poll I would have voted for both smart and dedicated. As it is I picked Smart.

I like these two classes because they developed some great new talents for them which make them useful hero classes even for fighting types. The dedicated tree which includes awareness and faith are excellent, as is the smart tree which includes the talent to let you use your Int instead of your Str/Dex when attacking a certain foe.

Superb ideas.

Ditto. :)

Thank goodness for the free, fast and furious multiclassing in d20 Modern!

I made a combat medic character (and would be happy to post his stats if you are interested). I agree that skill emphasis (Treat Injury) and faith (could be used for a Treat Injury check) would both be very useful. However, Healing Touch 1 and 2 are not as useful as two more levels of Field Medic, since the Field Medic advanced class gives you +1 to damage healed for every level of that class from the Expert Healer ability (and you are working your way towards minor Medical Miracle, the real point of the advanced class). In addition, Medical Mastery from the Field Medic also probably supersedes Cool Under Pressure from the Dedicated class. My personal preference for the doctor character build is Dedicated 3, Field Medic 7, then back to Dedicated for much of the remainder.

Any reason it won't?

I went with tough, but dedicated is also really good.

you're right, but i was thinking of taking Healing Knack for the additional +2 to Treat Injury to get ever closer to the Medical Miracle DCs of 30 and 40

you're right. i must have totally overlooked this. although i could get to Cool Under Pressure faster (at level 5 instead of level 7, minimum), i haven't been able to decide what other skills to apply the 'take 10' ability to...

just that, sometimes life gets in the way of gaming. ---and don't get me wrong, i'm excited to give this PC, this group and this game a shot!

I think the multiclassing is great bonus to in D20M. I'd probably scrap the multiclass penalties in my D&D game if it wasn't that they were tied up with the balance of the different races.

Tonight we are intending to run a playtest sesion for one of our D20M projects. This one isn't on the list as its a secret project and will be revealed nearer to the time.

However, The playtest session is for just three characters; as we are in the process of developing our own advanced classes the players have not designed their own characters but have chosen what they want to play (this is so we could get a better idea of teh balance and requirements of advanced classes out of the character gen process).

We are also experimenting with a few tweaks to the class system for the specific flavour of our game: Firstly players start at 3rd level and with one level of an advanced class; this means that the entry requirements need to come down a level. We are alo working with the idea of advanced classes that are specifically designed for multiclass characters. Therefore a starting chracter will typically eb a level 1/1/1 in their two component basic classes and their chosen advanced class. I don't know if either of these systems will work out and make it into the finished game (afterall that's what the playtest session is for). But I do like the characters we've built with it.

The three characters are as follows (the names of the classes might give you a hint to the style of game, but its not something easy to guess (we hope!)...):

Rat Moreau Cabbie (taxi driver to any americans). This character is a dedicated/fast. The character has a total skill bonus of +16 to drive! It's incredible what you can manage with vehicle expert, skill emphasis and a blue collar occupation when you've already got all the skills you need for your character, oh and the 18 dex helps too!)

Dog Moreau Hunter. This character is dedicated tough but a lack of intelligence has cost him on the skills front. Mind you, he is a brick of a character - the party's combat guy.

Human Gentleman Adventurer. The gentleman adventurer is a mix between charismatic and tough. They turn out to be quite a jack-of-all trades.

So I've got two levels of touch and two levels of dedicated - and without a medic in sight!

let me know what you think...

Ben
