DarkPsion: you are totally missing the point. This isnt a forum about gamers, it is a forum about publishers. This guy is trying to be a publisher and he is screwing up royally. That hurts everyone. His total lack of doing any research or attempting to figure out in any basic way how to comply with the license is shocking--particularly when there are so many great resources right here on ENWorld about getting up and running as a publisher and using the d20 and OG licenses. I am glad to see he is trying to get compliant.

Strutinan: good luck! Sure, you shot yourself in the foot. But focus on doing another product and doing it right and getting involved and up to speed with the OGL community. Join the message boards/email lists of the open gaming foundation and check the resources here on ENWorld.

One point thats been a thorn in my side for a while now. I didn't lack to do research on the OGL, I failed to UNDERSTAND what I found out. Hence my missunderstanding about the 30 day order, highlighting SRD text to indicate it's use, ect.

EarthsShadow: Advice I am DEFINATELY following, right now as a matter of fact. I put my first official in-concept play-test to bed and am doodling the ideas I had now.

Somehow this topic has been interesting for customers to understand the dangers of the OGL and the assumptions that whoever who wishes to be a publisher must be aware.

I really hope that this product isn't banned for what is clearly a cumulative number of mistakes due ,mostly, by stress and without any kind of bad intention.

Just a bit of advice for future threads: keep the tone respectful and polite. Sure, Strutinan's experience seemed like watching a train wreck, but the number of people jumping forward to kick him and deride him was disappointing. In the world where I'm King, the thread would have lasted 1/2 a page and then someone would have started a strictly e-mail conversation to help him out.

It's really my fault for not having closed the thread way back then. I'm going to leave this open for a bit yet, on the off-chance that there's something positive someone wants to say (not another left-handed compliment or kick and then offering a kind word).

I've been doing my best to stay out of this one. I just enjoy controversy too much. And then there's that small matter of who employs me...

Anyway, Strutinan, obviously this has been a good learning experience both in tems of the license and public relations. I would like to add my voice to those who say that you shouldn't give up because of this, and you should keep working on new material. If this book is half as good as the people who have bought it and read it say it is, then I might just buy a copy after it gets re-posted.

Also remember that there are people on these boards that would be willing to look over upcoming material as proofreaders or beta testers if you give them the chance. You can never have too many eyes looking over a product.

When 3E first came out, I followed the links to the various agreements WOTC posted for independent publishers - and understood almost none of it. From reading some of the threads here, it seems that it has taken a lot of people a lot of time to figure it out. So...has anyone considered writing a pdf on how to publish OGL material? Not just pointing the reader to forums and discussion groups, but actually walking a newbie through the entire process. Explain the difference between D20, OGL, OGC, PI, etc. Give examples of pitfalls to avoid, using real-world examples. Basically, an "Idiots" guide to D20 publishing.

Yes, anyone who wants to can find this info on their own, but the attraction of a guide is that they wouldn't have to spend countless hours tracking it down, then figuring out how to apply it all. For those trying to break into the business, it could be the best $5 - $10 they spend.

IANAL. And that's why I won't, shouldn't and can't write such a thing. Offering advice about entering legal contracts and stuff is generally illegal if you aren't a lawyer (or a party to the agreement).

OTOH, it might be nice to keep pointers to these threads where people get slammed for not reading correctly. Strutinan made a most interesting remark when he said he had done the research and the reading but he didn't realize that he had misunderstood it. Which is not an unusual circumstance according to this NY Times Article
