[Dallas Gameday] Aftermath and Commentary starts on Page 10!

There used to be a pretty large gaming con in Dallas (called, er.., DallasCon) that ran all through the 80's and early-mid 90's. They also hosted the '93 Origins in Ft. Worth. Once a local gaming institution, that con died years ago and nothing has come even remotely close to it since.

Regional con gaming in North Texas has been an utter void since then. :(

Lemme know the date, and I'll be there. I'll even run something. Probably something with cannibals. And zombies. Or something.

The reason I'm organizing this shindig is because your ass can't make it to Saturday games, and now you're running something?!?! :D

Dalcon was nice, it was tacked onto the Art Faire, but it was also at the DFW Marriot (back then) and so had nice facilities. The true con experience in the 80s in Dallas was the Dallas Fantasy Fair. At its heyday it was held three times per year, had a huge dealers hall and tons of gaming. Then there were the quarterly minicons....mmmmm.

Fantasy Fair was cool too, but I never saw as much gaming there as DallasCon - it seemed much more Fan-ish if you take my meaning. Still a lot of fun though! :D

Maybe I was missing something on the gaming at FF. I was primarily involved with DallasCon as an AD&D Open Tourney DM for several years (there was a consistent crew of us back in the early 90's), so that might be coloring my memories somewhat.

Sad that Dallas cons (aside from A-Kon, which is getting pretty damn big) are pretty much nostalgia fodder at this point.

Speaking of A-Kon, they're in the Adam's Mark next year (lots of space), and do seem to have at least a little gaming scheduled. Not that I'm a huge anime fan - I've never actually attended that con, so I have no idea how gaming-friendly it is.

Great idea. I was wondering if someday a Game Day for Dallas would come to fruition. I hope I'm not busy then. Hopefully someone will run something a little different from the traditional sword-and-sorcery, FR sort of game.

I have been hoping someone from ENworld would hold a Dallas gameday. I'm two hours south of Dallas, but would be willing to drive up just for the chance to experience some new games and settings. In fact, even though I've never run any games at a convention, if there was enough interest I might be willing to run a Traveller d20 game.

Hey all,

Wizard World Dallas is going to be Nov. 21st through the 23rd at the Arlington Convention Center.

At my store we run regular RPGA Living mods pretty much every Saturday and starting in September we'll be running Legacy of the Green Regent mods as well. My store can have three tables at the most going at the same time but it's very well possible I could reserve my bank's community room for an all day event. They have at least 10 tables with chairs there but they do charge 60 bucks a day.

We have a pretty big community via the Talon RPGA game events but I'd love to see more of you. :) Our discussion group is located at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/talonrpga

Cool Derek, thanks for that link! Sixty bucks seems pretty cheap if we get enough people for ten tables of games.

Anyone in/near Arlington know anything about these guys (Recreational Gaming Community)? I ran across them while doing a search for another thread topic. They run gameday-like events at J. Gilligan's in Arlington. I've never been there, but apparently, they've got a party/game room "draft house" they rent out for special occasions. The RGC folks are using that space September 6th and are charging $6 a head for a 10-hour event. I posted the details (after extracting the info from their site) on this thread.

The idea of having food and drink handy like that is muy bueno - I wonder what that space is costing them? I bet there are several cool places like that we might find if we can get enough attendance. J. Gilligan's is a UTA hangout, I think - perhaps there's similar space in Denton near UNT/TalonComics?

There are food places near my store but none of them would be great places to play mainly due to the noise level and distractions.
The community room I'm interested in is next door to Braum's Ice Cream, Pizza Hut, KFC and 7-11. Across the street is Subway and Little Caesars. While the location is about 10 minutes from my store it is literally off I-35 and easily accessible from Dallas and Ft. Worth.

I don't really like the idea of holding an event in a public space like a restaurant. Derek's Denton bank room might be just the place, I'm fairly certain most people wouldn't mind a $2 kicker to rent the room.

What hours would the room be available for, Derek?

If nothing else, I know there was an Arlington AD&D Club that used one of the recreation centers to play every other Saturday. Rec center rooms are another option, certainly, it's just too bad we don't have a Games Plus type store down here.

So far it looks like the 27th is the favored time, although we haven't really heard from too many people yet.
