I was honestly surprised when I heard what the Hulk's budget was. The effects are about on par with most Godzilla movies -- everything actually looks cheesy and fake.

tell you what - why don't you list exactly which effects in The Hulk were "cheesy" (gee, what a descriptive, all-encompassing 'word') before I point to a thread on a different board specifically about how CGI gets bashed inaccurately.
And yes, most people thought the effects were great.
I don't have any studies which relate that fact, but I'd point to the worldwide box office as some proof.
Any movie with that hideous of story that sold THAT many tickets MUST have had something interesting to watch in it for MOST people (not internet forum denizens).
