Dark Sun Coinage

Iron actually turns greenish when fired to vitrification. Iron rich clay would be more of a dark brown, you are thinking of tera cotta, which is fired a low temperature, and if used as currency wouldn't really make any sense as it would be incredibly easy to counterfeit.

Oh you're not pooping on my party :) The high proportion of bone ash present along with the iron changes the chemistry and results in the characteristic red glaze.
