Dark wandering swordmage

First Post
Hello everyone,

In our current campaign the party just went paragon after a battle against a god of time and, because the world our campaign is set on seems to be merging with elemental chaos, I went with wandering swordmage.

Since I like to plan out my characters for about 10 lvls up i took a look at the epic destinies and Dark wanderer seemed like a perfect fit for a wandering swordmage, the only problem is the ranger/rogue prerequisite.

Now I'm wondering which one of those would be the best to multiclass to, fluff-wise as well as stat-wise. One of the things i'm really interested about is the doublesword, I heard they are great with rangers but i can't figure out how.

I am a shielding swordmage and i'm the only defender for our group (ranger, rogue, vampire, wizard, druid and bard). Any help would be appreciated. thanks :)

Either multiclass feat works, assuming you have the stats to qualify. You don't want much more than a multiclass feat or two - if your swordmage uses a rapier, the sneak attack feat is probably better and if not then quarry.

Double swords suck for swordmages. Avoid. For rangers they are actually slightly weak - but they allow you to twin strike, which is the ranger's bread and butter. Swordmages want one hand free for their aegis.

Here's the real trick: just ask your DM if you can skip that requirement.

Like in all editions of D&D this is the one true answer ;) How much can you get away with without resorting to the rules?

Anyhow, to the OP, as a shielding swordmage there's very little that a doublesword does for you because you don't have multi-attacks. Now, if you were a hybrid ranger or paragon-multiclass ranger that would be a different story.

I suggest going with the basic Warrior of the Wild ranger multiclass feat since the hunter's quarry it gives you is always useful for a melee character like you're playing.

If the DM won't let you, the easiest method is to get Twilight Adept since the 13 Int prereq is easily satisfied. Next up is Hunter of the Wild cause Str 13 also suits some other Swordmage prereqs.

I will say, dual implement spellcaster (hey, there's a use for a double sword - though it's still kinda dubious) does cost 2 AC, and the Dex edges you towards arcane reach, which is an awesome feat, but sometimes AC isn't the most important thing in the world. Depends on the game, and all that.

Thanks for the replies, I don't think the dm will let me take the destiny without multiclassing so I'll probably take warrior of the wild for the quarry and skill training. My swordmage is an eladrin so i have the dex for it.

Too bad about doubleswords, I was looking forward to play a dual wielding swordmage, especially since they have the ac boost but if they don't have any other use I wont actively search for them. dual implement spellcaster is a pretty good idea though, but i dont use implement powers that much.

I find it's easier to ignore damaging implement powers at lower level, but at 17th thundering vortex and at 23rd radiant shield change that assessment.
