Spell casters still have the option to cast leveled spells that deal damage too and don't need to rely strictly on cantrips. If its less than a D8 you're back to every mage being a crossbowman.

Crossbows are cool. If I were a wizard without unlimited super-beams I'd definitely carry one.If its less than a D8 you're back to every mage being a crossbowman.
Sometimes I do. Depends on the game. That doesn't save you unless you draw a really hard line between playable species and opponent species.
Is that supposed to be a bad thing? How many spells do they have? How long do you want your dungeon runs to last?
In the old days it wasn't hard to run yourself out of spells pretty quickly; that's why the throwing darts and crossbows became a thing in the first place--to conserve spell slots.
That all depends on their class and level, but why does that matter? How many spells do they have?
However long it takes the party to complete their objective, for them to turn back or die. If I'm DMing I'm sure not going to create an adventure/dungeon based on the parties' resources let alone the number of spells they have at their disposal. Resources are up to them to decide where, how and when they are used. How long do you want your dungeon runs to last?
Why should it be any different now?In the old days it wasn't hard to run yourself out of spells pretty quickly; that's why the throwing darts and crossbows became a thing in the first place--to conserve spell slots.
I think I would work with it more if all the PCs had DV and I would describe things differently if they were using it. I do not explain things twice and think the players will not know what's going on. I might place a map on the table and the room might be 60 ft long, leaving the far end in darkness for some of the PCs. I do not cover it for them and then show the others what is down there. I would not cover part of the room from description or wait until some went halfway down, unless there was a reason like a trap.Handwaved because half have it and half don’t?
