Dawn of War 2... your thoughts?

I just got it last week and have played a couple missions on the Single Player campaign. The jury is still out on whether I like it as much as the original game. It definitely is more true to the tabletop game in that you don't build units within the mission. The units you start with are the ones that you have to finish it with. If you like traditional RTS games that involve economy, base building, tech research and unit production then this isn't the game for you. On the other hand if you want to jump right into the action and play a more tactical game (covering advances with supressing fire, using grenades to flush units out of cover, etc) then this is a wonderful game. It is similar to Warcraft 3 in that your squad leaders gain levels and you get to choose how to improve them with each level gained. You also can outfit them with wargear either found in the missions or awarded for the completion of a mission. Cover is handled much better than the original Dawn of War (identical to Company of Heroes) and pretty much everything is destructible. This is something to keep in mind when playing multiplayer. If you build a vehicle at your base and instruct it to move to the front lines it will do so in the most efficient manner possible, even if that means driving through/over all of the cover structures between your base and that point (thus depriving your units of valuable cover).

What do you think of it?

Mixed feeling, overall. It doesn't give me a more refined game experience than Dawn of War 1 - it is definitely a different type of experience.

It's probably not the perfect game for me, real-time strategy without base-building.

But I still like it enough to continue playing it so far. ;)
