Dawn of War - 40K

Picked up Dawn of War a couple of weeks ago and have been playing it off and on and have to say I am still undecided if I like it.

The game is RTS and in the easiest setting means you can win by shear numbers, this changes in hard and insane levels of the game where you have too build and plan your attacks, strenghting your troops and just start to wear them down.

The game has too forms, Campiagn and Skirmish. Campiagn being the long drawn out war and skimish being a battle with no ties. You can play any one of the 40K groups, Space Marine, Choas Marine, Eldar, ORK, and DWARF. Each race has different abilities. Buildings are standard with different appearances on each side, but tech while producing the same effect is different. You gain resources by capturing strategic points on the maps.

Game is also multi-player.

Pros: The game is addictive and rather fun to watch, seeing Orks being blow sky high from land mines is just cool. :D

Cons: RTS - I dislike them, while DoW does not really have too many building to build and different troop types you still have to feed the ques, moving from the battle field to each building to make sure all is well, DoW has shortcuts to help this but it is a drawback of RTS.

Note: Been playing a skirmish game in different levels, in the easy level won by overpowering my foes, in the hard levels had to build picket line to build my forces (depending on mine fields and turrets) then taking the next point and then strenghtening it before moving on. In hard I took and lost a point seven times and won by peforming a two prong attack on my foe.

Hand of Evil: But you do have to admit that the gamed does capture the feeling of the warhammer 40K universe. The fact that you have to take and hold the strategic points to win forces you to be on the offensive. If you turtle, you'll croak.

The game is highly addictive and captures the feel for each of the differnet armies rather well. As far as RTS's go this one is top notch. Now if only they'd release an add on that gives us a full garud army.

Yes, I do admit it game is all 40K and that I am having a lot of fun with it, it is adictive and the special effects/graphics are very good. Third mission of the Campaign - Siege I thing it is called for Space Marines was intensive in its frustration.

I guess I do like the game even if I say I can't decide. ;)

Did not know about the add-on, thank for the info.

I like it. I've always been a sucker for cool animations. I especially like it when the dreadnaught picks up guys, spins them around and tosses them aside. There's so many cool animations going on that just watching a battle is really fun.

As for gameplay, I wish the units had more differences. I like games with the "chess" or rock-paper-scissors approach where they all have varying weaknesses/strengths. In WH40K, it feels like you're just building up forces and throwing them into a meat grinder. There are some specific tactics (like using the jetpacks to plop melee squads into the middle of ranged squads) but battles mostly feel like big furballs.

The shelf life on this game isn't as high as some other RTSs. But it's a polished game with high production values. I've played it for about a month now and gotten my money's worth.
