[Dawning Star] Helios Rising Contest Winners

Back in April, when it became apparent that Helios Rising was growing astronomically large, we decided to do a contest. It went like this:

Like some self-replicating nanite colony gone horribly awry, the page count for our upcoming Helios Rising release keeps going up. So we decided to make a contest out of it. If you can guess how many pages Helios Rising will be, we'll send you a free copy of the book in both pdf and print format. Nothing fancy. Just e-mail me at justin[at]bluedevilgames[dot]com with your guess for the number of pages the final book will be. Use the subject line "Helios Rising Page-Count Contest" and make sure you include the number of pages for your guess, your name, and your e-mail address for us to contact you if you win. When Helios Rising is released in pdf format, we will determine who came closest. The page count will include all of the pages (including unnumbered pages) but will not include the front or back cover. If there's a tie for the winning guess, all of the entries with the winning guess will win the prize. We will take entries up until 12:00 AM (midnight) EST on May 5, 2006. Here's a hint: If you look around our site and various message boards, you can get some additional information to help you make your guess.

Well, we've finalized the page count for the book. It's clocking in at 540 pages. In retrospect, the contest rules were somewhat inartfully worded. (And I'm a lawyer for crying out loud.) Although we clearly stated that you would have to guess the correct amount to win the book, I decided that the "we will determine who came closest" language created something of an ambiguity. So, I decided that I'd declare whoever came closest to be the winner. Amazingly, we had three winning entries!

Congratulations to Justin Edwards (guessed 555 pages), Frank Mikes (555 pages), and Vaughn Kruger (525 pages)! Each of them will be receiving a free copy of HR in both pdf and print format.

The pdf version will be released within the next week and will be available through Indie Press Revolution, RPG Now, the EN World Game Store, and Drive-Thru RPG. The print version will be released at Gen Con and will be available through Indie Press Revolution and Key20 immediatley thereafter. Also, Indie Press Revolution will be running a pre-order special shortly. Anyone who pre-orders the print version from them will receive a free copy of the pdf immediately. (And, best yet, HR will automatically qualify for IPR's FREE shipping in the U.S.)

Helios Rising is 540 pages. The pdf version will sell for $17.95. The print version is perfectbound and will sell for $44.95.

I'll be keeping my eye out for that special pre-order deal. Be sure to post when it happens; there's incentive to get the print if I get the PDF right away! :D
