DCC: 13 CRYPT OF THE DEVIL LICH After Report

Well, after plodding through the first 2 rounds of the module, my party had made it more or less alive! I was so disappointed - sure there were a few near deaths and such, but I wanted the real thing! When would I get my fair share?

Round three reared its ugly head, and then I knew. . .

SPOILER ALERT

Ok, the Meat grinder room was an absolute massacre. 2 PCs dead almost instantly with the huge air elemental almost taking out a third and fourth!

Thinking the worst was over, then came the Mummy Dragon room - yipes. The party learned the effective damage of this beast can often exceed PC hitpoints when suffering a single full attack. But NO WORRIES - they defeated it. . . and LOOTED it's hoard! Did I mention that all the magical items in its stash are cursed? 2 more PCs die instantly - Necklace of Strangulation and Cloak of poisonousness. 3rd almost dies from the Scarab of Death. NICE.

Good work GOODMAN GAMES! I loved playing the module in the Gencon Tourney last year. I loved even more seeing my party get crushed, whip-whapped, and sliced up. Truly it was the second coming of the Tomb of Horrors!

So...evil...and...wonderfull

That thing is on my wishlist but reading your little report really makes me wanna buy it now.

Edit: Could you give any indication how long it would take to play through it, given the PCs survive it *cackles*

Would you use this in an ongoing campaign or just as a side-bar or tournament adventure?

As a DM, I'm of the mind that there is no product that cannot be tweaked somewhat to make it inclusive in a campaign. That said, this generally suits itself better as a one-off, both because of its tournament style, and its lethality!.

It would make a solid and final end to a long campaign, perhaps not that pleasing to Players fully invested in their PCs.

Yeah...at GenCon, our team managed to get in and out of "meat grinder" room...

After purchasing the module, I can see how bad that room could potentially be...:)

I received this a couple weeks ago and it really is one of the best tournament adventures I've seen published in a long time. It is more geared towards convention play as the character death is very, very high. But it does contain rules for incorporation into long term campaigns. If your players are not used to heavy character losses though, they might not make it. (given the adventure's level and the ubiquity of resurrection now, that might not matter to them)

The module is split up into 3 floors each completed in separate tournament rounds. Three sessions as a one-shot game might be best unless your players are accustomed to continuous-combat, high-lethality games. It really is a nicely tweaked homage to Tomb of Horrors.
