DCSIII 1e PHB original art - A Paladin in Hell - for sale

Actually, one of the reason's he's sold the artwork might have had to do with an illness or illnesses he suffered.

There was a thread touching upon this that someone posted on RJK's boards...

http://p085.ezboard.com/fpiedpiperpublishingfrm8.showMessage?topicID=19.topic

Read there and follow the links.

I'd hate to see an old-timer get discouraged. I'm hoping that because the thread is placed on this higher-traffic site DCS3 will get more of his originals sold to the old-timers who remember and love his stuff.

I don't think I ever quite appreciated Dave Sutherland's work until just this moment. It wasn't just good by the standards of 1978... it's phenomenally good even now. Does he still work in the industry?

Not much. He worked for TSR through the 1990s but didn't transition from there to WotC. Off the top of my head, I don't know what his most recent art project was in the industry, though I'm sure someone will chime in with details :D

I bid and kept watching it but ended up saying "no". It was worth the price it went for BUT my daughter just had $1300 worth of dental work :( .

I think a daughter's teeth are worth more than any painting :)

I think towards the end he was doing mostly cartography projects. Maybe he worked on the "complete" World of Greyhawk map that appeared in Dragon?

Dave rescued this item along with the original DMG cover artwork

Anyone else notice this reference in the text of the bid? For me, the 1e DMG cover is the definitive image of AD&D. How much would THAT go for I wonder?
