Really, did it need to be .Net at all?? If they had used Java*, the application would run on Linux, Macs, Windows, etc. out of the box and I would be a happy subscriber...

And no, i dont know if any of the tools will run with mono as they seem to be 3.5 based. If you want to run this stuff on a Mac stop complaining and start coding.

Unfortunately, all Java based aplication I have used would never work the way they have the tools now. The tools would be dog slow, ugly, and not as usable by non-computer type people.

I for one, am glad they are not java - and I have supported java apps before.

I wouldn't say they're pushing it- they're just using terminology that I've been hearing for at least a decade...on both sides.

Another month has passed, and the total has climbed by another 4500 members.

So we have these data points now:

• 2009-09-06: 7972
• 2009-10-06: 14392
• 2009-11-06: 18911

Not quite as much growth in October as there was in September, but I'm quite surprised that the number of new members didn't taper off more.

Well, its technically growth of DDI members who happen to activate their WotC community accounts and remained a member of the DDI group. I'd expect the numbers to slow down after a while.

I expected the numbers to slow down much sooner! After the launch of the new community accounts/groups, it seems natural for there to have been a flood of people creating accounts and thus getting added to the group. But for the group still to be growing at ~150 people per day two months later doesn't seem to be as much of a slow down as I thought we'd see.

However we don't have a clue about the retention rate of DDI subs overall, just some lower bound for new subs. In the end, we can't make many conclusions.

Even if you assume a 50% dropout rate, which is likely pretty high, 9000 members in a couple of months is damn good.
