From the information that has been released so far on DDI, you have your normal account, and then pay for additional content by becoming a subscriber.
For most things, like message board posting and such, I can see this being just business as usual because many forums have paying members and non-paying members and all that really changes is stuff like what your avatar or name can look like or your access to PMs. So you can pay for a year, not pay for a while, then pay again and there is no real disruption.
For the digital gaming portions, will you be able to pick and choose when you're subscribed like City of Heroes, with your account essentially frozen when you aren't subscribing, or will all of your saved maps, characters, and/or virtual minis *poof* after X number of days. Or, will you be able to export things from DDI and then reimport them if you re-subscribe?
