DDI - The Seeker - PHB3 content

Or a hybrid dwarf fighter/seeker - when we get details on the strength based thrown weapon build.
Actually, I think a dwarf warden/seeker (with the str build) would be an interesting concept. Move away from me, I hurt you, get in close and I hurt you even more...

I just got an email from one of my players, a guy whose Elf Ranger has been playing since day one of my first 4e campaign (now 15th level).

Since we started playing, the character in question hasn't really had much of a background more than, "I'm an elf who likes the forest . . . and shooting things, I guess."

Anyway, I am suddenly greeted with a fully fleshed out story---in three acts, no less---about his spiritual awakening and arduous quest to bind himself with the animistic spirits of his people. The tale introduces a full family history, complete with a sister and a dying father straight out of King Lear, culminating in a harrowing ritual which bestows the mantle of "Seeker" upon the character---the sole elf of his generation chosen to control the primal spirits of the Wild.

He humbly requested that I allow him to change his class from [min-max/numbers on a page] Bow Ranger to [heavy RP/living, breathing character] Seeker between sessions---all from a single reading of the article and a few minutes with the character builder.

I'm a very, very happy DM right now.

Oh congrats, your players are growing up:) My elf archer also considers the seeker (but will stick with ranger because he has the beastmaster feature and likes his wolf more than is healthy).

Maybe he could sprinkle a bit of Seeker on his Ranger when we get a MC Feat. Or even better, a Hybrid >_>

Hmm I always forgot about the warden; I dont think the class is on my internal radar yet.

Hmm, yeah I might try and figure out how a Seeker hybrid would be. I guess he would loose seeker's bond but not sure how to handle inevitable shot. Inclined to leave it as such as a hybrid feature though maybe changing the trigger to : You miss a creature with a Seeker ranged attack power should be done, otherwise inevitable accuracy (the epic feat) might be OP. Anyway blood bond would be kept as a hybrid talent choice.

I'm pretty confident that you're correct, as it makes the most sense given how other hybrid powers work.

I was just reading the flavor text from the 16th-level utility power sure sight when the following struck me (the second and fourth lines are almost exact quotes from the flavor text):
In brightest day, in darkest night,
No earthly force can block my sight.
Nature's enemies, take flight.
My missiles shine with emerald light!

:D

I think looking at the Seven Fates Archer PP will give you a good idea.
Interestingly, the designer commentary says that PP is more LEader like.

So let's see. The thing that makes them quasi-strikers is their good single-target damage, and their minor shift. As well, the Escaping Spirits is part of the Bloodbound path.

Then a Defender will likely get a Power, a Feature, and a theme for his powers.

I wonder if the Feature involves getting temp HP? So the Seeker can take punishment like a defender? Maybe the power can redirect an attack to the Seeker (or is an attack nullification, like the Swordmage)?

Whatever the case, I'm really intrigued. And eager to see PHB3! :D

A friend of mine played the Seeker over the weekend, and observed some weaknesses in the class. Pretty much, they revolve around the issue of burst/blast vs. primary target/secondary target.

1) With no bursts/blasts, the Seeker can't effectively fight a swarm.

2) Given that the powers are primary attacks with splash damage, you have to HIT the primary target for any effect to occur. Compare this with getting multiple attacks with a burst/blast. Even with Inevitable Shot, you get two attacks. If you action point a burst/blast, you get multiple attacks twice.

Further, with other controllers' bursts/blasts, you can aim the effect like dropping it behind the enemies to prevent the blast from hitting allies adjacent to the monster. With the Seeker, you have to shoot the target, and if it's "all creatures adjacent", you get friendly fire.

3) You're always attack AC. So you can't deciper the enemy's weak defense and attack that defense, like you can other controllers (and even non-controller classes).
