Dead Baaz as an obstruction

Thanks for the responses.

Infiniti2000:

Lightweight stone / constant weight does not quite fit, I think. I am thinking along the lines of at least double weight. I do not intend to apply damage to the bridge at all aside from Fireball type area attacks, and deliberate attempts to bring the bridge down. DC 16 to push the off the bridge does sound fine though.

I am using the DC for a Sloped or Angled floor (DC 10, but only apply when charging / running). The only modification will be the addition of a check if you take damage on the bridge, but the DC for that check will be the same as the damage inflicted.

Ogrork the Mighty: Good advice if I wanted to avoid complications. However, I want the complications. I mean for the fight to be memorable.

Anyway, here is what I think I will run with:

Bridge:
DC 10 Balance check if you wish to try to run / charge across the bridge.
If you take damage on the bridge, Balance DC == Damage
Squeezing past Obstacle: Squeezing + Balance DC 12
Pushing Obstacle over: DC 10 Balance check.

Falling: If you fall down on bridge, DC 10 Reflex save to not fall off of bridge.
If you fall off of bridge, DC 15 Climb check to catch yourself.

Any further comments / suggestions?

If you fall off, I thought it was a standard of DC 20 to catch yourself, or was that somewhere else? I swear I remember reading that somewhere (maybe RotG). Personally, I'd recommend even less than DC 15. You can justify any value, however, easily enough with a circumstance bonus of any size due to the ropes.

You should have a Climb DC to climb over the statue. Probably something like DC 5-7.
Interestingly, that one's explicitly covered: "A DC 15 Climb check allows a character to climb a statue."

:D

Even better. I think the DC is a little high for such a small statue though. I see DC 15 as being for those biggy statues/idols that PCs want to pry the gemstone eyes out of.

Just a trivial and meaningless followup. The encounter on the bridge was great fun. My players were smart enough not to try to cross the bridge, and kept it a mostly ranged weapon affair. The Balance checks did come into play, however, but no one fell off the bridge.

Thanks again.

Kind of off topic for rules, but the scenario had a lot going on.

- Unsteady suspension bridge that required balance checks
- 70 foot fall to bottom of ravine
- Mostly 5 foot wide footpath with a few 10 foot areas leading up to the bridge
- 2 Baaz with Halberds holding the players back on the bridge
- A Bozak Draconian and 3rd level Hobgoblin cleric acting as support
- 4 2 HD Hobgoblin archers on the far side
- 2 Bugbear Barbarians who were on a cave on the edge of the nearside, climbing up while the players are occupied

The fight was quite entertaining. Not quite as much peril as i thought I could put the players in, but the Bubbears had some good moments when i scored a hit for 1d12+18 damage (yay Power Attack). And I managed to do some damage to flying summoned monsters with a Colour Spray from the Bozak (stunned, fell), and a Command spell to fall from the Cleric (Cleric spoke infernal, Infernal Dire Bats can communicate).

- Str check to move the statues. I already ball parked it(between 16 and 23), but would not mind suggestions to narrow it down.
- Balance Check DC to avoid falling off when squeezing around a statue.
- Balance check DC to keep your footing when pushing the statue off. If you succeed, the bridge will suddenly push back. Fail, and you simply pushed yourself off the bridge.
ISTM that if the PCs risk falling off as they try to squeeze past the statues, then tipping the statue off shouldn't be that difficult; a lot easier than moving the statue around on solid ground, anyway. Conversely, if the sides of the bridge are sufficiently sturdy to keep the statues in place then the PCs won't risk falling off.

Is it feasible at this stage to make it a stone bridge? That way you can make it much narrower and also believably give it no sides (or low sides that impede statue moving but not PC falling).

Of course, if the PCs are smart the will push living draconians of the bridge instead... but smart PCs are a good thing IMO.

EDIT: Never mind, looks like I hadn't got all the way to the end of the thread. Anyway, glad you had a fun encounter! :D
