Deals with the devil?

All of the wish-granting powers that Devils had in 3.5e are missing in 4e. How are devils supposed to strike deals with mortals these days?

The Pit Fiend (according to the preview) is supposed to grant one wish every 99 years. I think that got cut because of too little space in the MM.

The Faustian Deal element of Devils is not something that really needs to be in a statblock, since it is not apt to come up very often in the middle of a fight.

However, I will agree that having some idea of what scope of deal any given Devil can grant might be handy.

Balard is basically correct, but if you looking for guidelines based on the power level of the devil, I would suggest something like:

Lower level devils - can't grant actual "Wishes". They will make bargains, but they can't grant anything beyond their own abilities, or beyond the abilities of whatever entities owe them a favor or service from previouis bargains.

Very clever devils can manipulate people and events to bring about the results they want, in order to meet their part of the bargain, although often not in a way that the PC would like. That's the problem with dealing with the devil, the "letter of the law" over the "spirit of the law". "You wanted the children out of the orphanage right? Well now that it's a pile of cinders, no more children will be forced to grow up there. The few who died were innocents and will go to a better afterlife. "

Very powerful Devils may be able to grant actual wishes, but those would be few and far between, and they would always be looking for loopholes in the wording of the wish so that they can corrupt the intent.

Yeah, but I am the DM, and I'm looking for some guidelines. :) What kind of stuff could low level devils offer?
The section on Imp Lore has some ideas:

* ...by helping their masters attain new spells or locate magic items...

* ...imps possess impressive knowledge about magical subjects...

So, off the top of my head: During a famine, a witch is having troubles keeping her family fed. So she cuts an infernal deal for Everlasting Provisions. It's a small pig with the face of a man. Every morning she slaughters it and cooks it up, then boils its bones and arranges them in a small casket. Overnight, the pig reconstitutes. Unfortunately, they soon discover that they can no longer consume regular food...

Cheers,
Roger
