D&D 5E Death Knight or the like

If it's his 1st time playing, my suggestion is to stick with the PHB and learn how the game actually works before suggesting him to use subclasses from other sources.

To the OP, if you're planning on playing in Adventures League, the majority of the suggestions will not be allowed. Also, Lawful Evil alignment is the only evil alignment allowed in AL, and it's highly frowned upon. Playing strictly out of the PHB, your closest suggestions would be a Paladin of Vengeance or an Eldritch Knight (fighter). Try those first and learn the game. Then if you are only playing in home games, and your DM allows, you may be able to seek other options.

Everyone thanks so much for all the help! After actually getting into it a bit and realizing just how MASSIVE the game is, (to your point), I made a paladin and think I'm just going to stick with that, and possibly make him take Oath of Vengeance. Plus ill be playing a lot more now, i can learn all the basics and do a playthrough first and then maybe think about attempting a death knight or something more complicated.

Thanks for the replies everyone, really supportive forum :D.

There really isn't that much stuff unless you start looking online for the unofficial stuff, which is why I always direct players to the players hand book and like adventurers league rules. In Adventures League rules, you can only use the PHB and 1 other player supplement only for your character, also you use the point buy system and when you level past 1, you only get the set amount of HP per level. It keeps things balanced.
