One of the major themes of all of the books has been adults not wanting to tell the "children" the whole truth, which leads to speculation and misbehaving on the part of the children because they don't know what's going on and go to great lengths to find out.
Molly keeps them from attending major meetings in the Order's headquarters; Dumbledore kept avoiding eye contact with Harry for whole semesters instead of telling him what the problem was. Snape is the one who wanted to lay it all on the line for Harry and the other adults wouldn't let him.
So I think the only mistake that Dumbeldore necessarily has made is not telling Harry what's what, as soon as he needed to know. But if he had, the books would have been much shorter and much more boring
Many of the necessary plot points have come about because Harry was kept in the dark.
Oops tornado siren.. gotta go ..
