Defenders and Marking: Alternate Marking

The following tactic is acceptable correct:

Alternate Marking

If you have two defenders in the group, they can group up on a single target creature using alternate marking to ensure that each defender gains the benefit of his mark if the main enemy switches target.

Now I know that two marks can't affect one target at the same time, and my understanding is that one mark supercedes the other so the most recent mark is the one active.

So ,for example, a paladin and fighter can gang up on a target and alternate marks to ensure the target receives a -2 penalty to attack if it focuses too often on a single target as well as ensure they gain the benefit of their mark such as an extra attack or damage done.

This tactic might not be so effective against creatures with multiple attacks or AoE attacks, but it seems very effective against creatures with limited attacks.

Has anyone used this tactic effectively in their group?
