Defining a decade with a song: 1980s

Before this last year, it would have been "99 Luftballoons" by Nena. Cheesy pop 80's dance sound, message of nuclear destruction.

Now, though, it would be "1985" by Bowling For Soup. Even though it came out recently, it has the perfect 80's sound, and talks about the 80s. Even Retro 80s radio programs have been slipping it in to their line-ups! :)

Oh, heck yes, Torm! I love that song! "1985". So great and have you seen the video for it? it's a trip back in time (without either Huey Lewis or Michael J. Fox..).

None of my 80s stations have slipped it in.... But the alternative station outta Charlotte played it for awhile. It got lots of airplay on FUSE on TV for awhile.

I'd go for "Axel F" by Harold Faltermeyer, "Amadeus" by Falco, "Thriller" by Michael Jackson or "Material Girl" by Madonna.

Those aren't my favorite 80s songs by any means, but they seem to really sum up the 80s pretty well. "Oh Yeah" by Yello might even be an option; it sure showed up in enough movies from the 80s.

I love listening to "Rock Me Amadeus" although I can't understand the German part of it. It's still got a great beat to listen to. :D

It's about something that happened in the 70s, but it was very much a song of the 80s. I still think some British kid who was two young to remember anything about it making a song about the human tragedy of the Vietnam war shows an awful lot of cheek. It's a little like if I made a song about the Falkland Islands or something.

And made it a cheezy little dance number that took itself seriously.

IT fit's due to the overwhelming "fascination" for stuff about Vietnam during that era. I mean, look at all the movies that dealt directly or indirectly (characters who were in 'Nam) with the war.. Right up there with stuff about the Cold War. Even Bruce Springsteen had a bit to say about 'Nam (being there and losing his brother during it.).

Except maybe:

[singing]When you're all alone, pick up the phone, and ya call - GHOSTBUSTERS! Ow![/singing]

WHO YOU GONNA CALL? GHOSTBUSTERS!!!!!! :D Love that song!

or

[singing]I never meant 2 cause u any sorrow
I never meant 2 cause u any pain
I only wanted 2 one time see u laughing
I only wanted 2 see u laughing in the Purple Rain[/singing]

Don't care too much for Prince (what he was called at the time)....

Nah, man. Bump that. Ray Parker loses, but Vanilla Ice wins? Balooney. I never even realized the similarities until I heard about the suit.

I think I'll just go copyright every pattern of notes possible - I'll be right back. (For once, I wish we had rolleyes, even though I usually hate them on other boards.)

Hell, they shoulda gotten that chick who recently did a song where the music was John Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane" with her singing on top of it.... That was much more blatant than Vanilla Ice.
