There were alot of songs that the '90's could have been about or should have been about, but ultimately the '90's ended up being about the mindlessness, nihilism, self-parody and vanity of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.
If I had the chance to pick what the '90's should have been about it would be the Scorpions 'Winds of Change' or maybe even Poison's 'Something to Believe In'. I never actually liked Nirvana, and I don't remember them being all that popular before Kurt did his impression of a '60's rock martyr.
At the beginning of the decade there was a saying that the '90's would make the 60's look like the 50's. As if that was something to look forward to. Instead, the last ugly hoorah of the self-absorbed baby boomers was to make the 90's make the 20's look like the 40's. And now someone is going to have to clean up thier mess after they broken all the toys that thier parents gave them.
All of which is to say that I have a hard time choosing a song from the '90's that I would want to protray the decade, because ultimately noone made much music that was about life from where I was standing.
