Degrappling in SW-SE

I'm at work so I can’t check for a page reference in my copy of Saga, but I can tell you all the information is in the Combat chapter under Grab and Grapple.

I think because it is simplified and more elegant, the old 3.x D&D parts of our brain are wanting to make it more complicated than it really is.

That's probably true. I was worried that I would make assumtions that the grappling would work like it does in D&D 3.x and overlook some of the SW-SE nuances.
 

Checking my copy of the book, it describes grapple as being an improved version of the grab action, available if you've taken certain feats.

Trip and Throw are easy enough. The grapple ends when you execute those feats.

For Pin however, since the feat benefit states the target is flat-footed until the start of your next turn, which would be indicative of the target not being able to easily break free since they'd still be penalized. Of course, it could be viewed as the target had to spend such effort to escape the Pin that they are still recovering for a few seconds, hence flat-footed until the start of your next turn.

I am inclined to agree with Baby Samurai that it just takes a standard action to break out of a grapple, as that's the simplest solution and most of the questions that have come up in regards to Saga Edition have pretty simple solutions.
 

I don't have my book with me, but my impression was that you automatically break out of the pin at the beginning of the grappling player's next turn, and that they have to keep using the pin each round to keep you immobilized.

No, you would still be considered "grabbed" until you took a standard action to break free.

But if you have been successfully "pinned" you would be denied your standard action.
