Wow. Thats the stuff that needs to be in the PHB! I am now completely interested in running a game in the actual core world. Especially one with a plot centered around the coolest "new" God in the game. Go Bane Go.

BANE VS. BANE
The Bane of the core D&D® setting is not the same god as the Bane of the FORGOTTEN REALMS® setting! Oh, there’s substantial conceptual overlap. (The matching names probably clued you in on that.) They serve roughly the same purpose in the pantheons, their religious precepts have a great deal in common, and they make use of similar tactics and servitors.
Yet their differences are many as well, especially in terms of personal history, behavior, and even appearance. All that follows describes the core Bane, and it shouldn’t necessarily apply to the Bane of Faerûn.

Which is funny, considering I was expecting a Kratos-Legion-Of-Doom-Spikey-Tattoo-Metal-Guy. This art is way better though.

If it makes you feel better, his original name is given in the article as "Achra".

"Bane" is the name given to him by his fearful primordial enemies - Achra/Bane became the first god to kill a primordial when he slew Tabrach-Ti, the Queen of Bronze.

I think at one point 4e's evil god of war was actually going to be called Ares.
