Delay Death + Diehard Combo

Markn

First Post
I have a player that has come up with a brilliant combo and just want to ensure this sounds correct.

Player has Diehard (allowing him to choose to be conscious while in the negatives) and then uses Delay Death (obviously cast before hand) to allow him to go past negative 10. Now in addition to that the player wants to use Shield Other and/or mass Shield Other (if this spell exists).

This seems like a loophole to me (though perfectly legal).

Thoughts?

Loophole says you. Juggling hand grenades says I.

Rules legality aside, he is gambling a lot on there being someone there to heal him (or self healing I suppose) back up to a nonlethal state before the spell duration is up...or some meddling mage casts something like Dispel Magic or Antimagic Field.

EDIT: BTW the way the first line reads: When reduced to between –1 and –9 hit points, you automatically become stable. You don’t have to roll d% to see if you lose 1 hit point each round. If this fellow took Shield Other damage that took him to -10 or lower he would nolonger have the automatic stablize.

Delay Death

What book is Delay Death in? What level spell? What kind of spell (Cleric, Druid, Mage???)

If memory serves it is Races of Destiny. The character in question is indeed a cleric and with spells such as heal it wouldn't take much to get back above the level. Especially if the party is protected from a Mass Shield Other (not sure if it exists of the top of my head).

Very, very good point about dispel magic or antimagic field though....I think I'll keep those ideas in mind and hush hush. It outta be fun to see the players face when that happens...

There is no Shield Other: Mass. Shield Other requires the two characters to be sheilded to be wearing matching platinum rings, remember.

The fact that the spell would only end up with a (non-munchkin) character being very dead quite quickly would also point to it not being a viable spell...

I just looked the spell up...

Too bad it isn't Personal only, because then you could use Persistent Spell feat on it. Of course you'd still have to look out for Dispel Magics.

More stuff

Mixmaster... I am not sure it really matters how many fireballs your oppenant has. Since the character in question is a cleric a heal or two would take care of that. Besides, who can afford to waste resources on someone who...just....won't.....die.

RigaMortus. The player had thoughts of using it with Extend Spell so the duration was longer.

Sullivan. I don't think the auto stablilzie is a big deal since he will always be conscious regardless of actual hp and even at 1 hp loss a round a heal spell will negate that pretty quick.

Still, all in all, dispel magic and antimagic field work extremely well against that. Thanks for the insight guys.

Yea a good dispel and that character plops to the ground dead, yikes. Still, should Delay Death even be a 3rd level spell?? Sounds like a minimum of 4th or higher heh.
