Deleted Table in 3.5 DMG?

First Post
Hi all,

I recall a table in the 3.0 DMG that listed typical starting distances for encounters based on the terrain type. I've searched through the revised DMG and PHB, but haven't found a new copy of the table. Was it deleted? If so, has it appeared in a subsequent product?

Thanks,

Shawn

The table is gone, as is the encounter distance rule set. In its place, the encounter distances are found within each environment's description in the DMG 3.5 (e.g. Mountain terrain, Forest terrain, etc.).

I think the ruleset was removed b/c it was overly complicated and hard to remember all the steps.

So it is. Thanks!

I'm just about to complete my first comprehensive read of the core books since the revision - lots of little changes that I had missed before now. I might still tabulate these numbers for ease of use. ;)

Here's the enounter distance formula:
Have everyone (PCs & NPCs) roll a spot (or listen if that would work better) check.

Take the highest spot and subtract the hide check of the opposing group (or 0 + special size modifier if the opposing group is not hiding)

Multiply the difference by 10.

That's the encounter distance in feet. Set it up.

I believe those table references are still a question in the RPGA DM test. At least they were when I took it, and that was well after 3.5 was released (about 6 months ago I believe). Drove me bananas, but now I know. They just arn't there. Heh...

Wow. I so needed to know that last game session. I thought I was just going insane.

Is that a house rule?
