D&D 5E Demon Lord Summoning Ideas

Not sure how these would fit with the complications of CoS, but...

One route is the Collection Quest. Opening the portal requires a ritual with X number of ritual foci, all of which are unique objects of mystical significance (though not necessarily innate power). There's a list of X+Y potential foci. The PCs get clued in by investigating the series of thefts and robberies and are able to reverse engineer the list and its use, or maybe thwart a theft and get info from the thieves. Then it's a race to collect objects themselves and deny the lich the magic number needed. Though obviously that's just a delaying tactic until they can defeat the lich itself.

Another route is Keymaster and Gatekeeper. This is like a scaled down version of Collection Quest, where there's just two or three vital pieces needed but they're harder to get. Stuff like "The unbeating heart of Strahd von Zarovich" and "The birthplace of the mortal woman who became the Raven Queen". Less travel and investigation, more big fights over key items or information.

Yet another is Hit The Books. This is where you roll back the villain's progress so that they don't know how to achieve their goal either, and the point of contention is their attempt to learn how such a ritual might be attempted at all. At this point the PCs are more likely to trip over enemy agents as they scour the planes for tomes of forbidden knowledge or attempt alliances with dark figures in return for their knowledge. This might actually work best with the CoS framework, where you don't want to distract the party too much from what's already going on in Ravenloft.

Thanks! I love opening a dialogue where people can bounce ideas.
Thinking about what you have said, these are how I could see myself doing:
A - An object touched/owned by who they are trying to rise, blood of a native from the abyss, the soul of a X, a celestial item corrupted by shadow etc
B - a slumbering entity released (vestige in amber temple), the heart of a Solar etc (as you said, less things, but BIGGER)
C - The lich sends the party away to take a book they need from the wizard they have been protecting / goes to Ravenloft because an artifact they seek is in the amber temple so its a race who gets there first.

A few possibilities:
- The PCs learn of the ritual and find some way to defeat Strahd without slaying him.
I haven't played CoS so I don't know Strahd's abilities, but:
If he can turn into a cloud of vapor (like black-and-white movie Dracula), bottle up the vapor in a container that is not big enough for a full-grown man.

For style and flair, use a glass bottle and place it on a windowsill that will receive the first sunlight of dawn. Turn him into dew/condensation inside the glass!

I certainly like the idea of bottling vampire mist but that would be such an anti-climatic way to destroy Strahd in sunlight xD

Thinking of dropping in "The Book of Vile Darkness" as the book that details the ritual needed along with the ingredients/possible ingredients and other things like special conditions of the ritual. ( must be done on a full moon )

You need Orcus's True Name to summon him physically into the Shadowfell. Orcus can't/won't tell the lich, so he is searching out bits of text and forgotten lore that contain parts of the True Name.

The PC's can try to find locate and recover/destroy them first to try and stop the lich. (Series of dungeon/tomb explorations and battles with the liches minions.)

Eventually the lich gets enough of the name to try the summoning Orcus, but doesn't have the full name, causing the ritual to take longer. This gives the PC's time to find and disrupt the ritual while the lich is performing it.

Thats a pretty good idea, not sure why I didnt think of that, a demons name can give you alot of power/sway over it.

I know the Book of Vile Darkness says it can contain rituals and/or the true name of fiends, but I think it would be pretty cheap to find it all at once.
Would you recommend a different book for each subject or torn pages?

The Demonomicon of Iggwilv is said to have Orcus' true name and that of several other powerful demon lords inscribed therein.
You just have to go to the plane of Greyhawk and fight one of the toughest BBEGs in the world (some fellow named Iuz - rumored to be a half-fiend and immortal and a natural undead too) to get it.
Or the book might be placed in the very lowest basement of Castle Greyhawk. "For safe keeping" - let the PCs make of that what they will.

If you have the 3e Truenamer material, Orcus' true name might be in the possession of whoever their 'legendary Truenamer' character is. He of course is not willing to share such powerful and portentous knowledge with a bunch of strangers who just show up on his doorstep...

I was thinking that an especially prideful and disrespectful PC might watch the mist condense and decide to drink the resulting flask of water. Let's see Strahd survive THAT experience!

Im thinking of having my BBEG or lesser, summon a planar ally of Orcus to tell him where the book may be kept and from their the race against time would ensue.
In the same manner, I have the Raven Queen (Enemy of Orcus) help guide the players in times of need through one of her priests.

I like the idea of an individual knowing the true name. I was thinking of giving it to Asmodeus, a beholder or an ancient dragon.

Who knows what could happen if they essentially drank the mist of Strahd, not good things i bet!
