Demonic Ideas: Need help with an idea for some demon foes

AFGNCAAP

First Post
Hello,

For my campaign, I was thinking of having the PC's eventually fight against some outsiders. However, I'd figure I'd make the encounters a bit more memorable if I provided the outsiders with names, rather than saying "the balor" or "the cornugon."

I'm still trying to decide on some of the other outsiders that I'll use as foes (a few devils, 1 or 2 yugoloths, a death slaad, some demodands, etc.), but I've pretty much decided that I'll use about 4 demons. The twist/catch/problem?

Well, as a tip of the hat to Warhammer (which a few of my players play), I was going to name these demons after Chaos gods. So far, I've been able to come up with:

  • A balor named Khorne;
  • and a vrock named Tzeentch.

I'm trying to figure out what other existing types of demons may work for Nurgle (Chaos plague god) and Slaanesh (Chaos indulgence god). I'm more or less basing the choices after what the big Warhammer demon minis look like (hence, why Khorne is a balor, and Tzeentch is a vrock). I have no idea (off the bat) for Nurgle, & I think that a glabrezu might work for Slaanesh.

Any ideas?

P.S. BTW, I'm even considering throwing in a few more demons based off of Chaos gods--what would work for the god for the Chaos Dwarves? Or the patron of Warhammer's Dark Elves? Or the Skaven?

Any info/advice/comments/etc. would be helpful.

I don't know anything about Warhammer (including what those minis look like), but here's a few ideas:

Slaadesh (if it looks like the prototypical gluttony god- bloated and pig-like:

-Demon- nalfeshnee- it likes to dine on souls, perhaps with a few levels of the fiend of corruption PrC (from the fiend folio) and some cultists

-half-fiend fatling (from the Creature Collection

-a fiendish or half-fiend anthropomorphic pig/boar or wereboar with class levels in barbarian

-demodand/gehreleth, kelubar or shator- in the Fiend Folio or Tome of Horrors

Nurgle (assuming its doglike):

-half-fiend or fiendish gnoll with class levels in some class and Cancer Mage and/or Vermin Master (from the BoVD)

-a Fallen/corrupted Hound Archon

-arcanaloth (yugoloth) (from the MM2)

-nightshade, nightwalker

Part of it depends on whether you want to use the D&D flavor, the warhammer flavor, or something in between.

Balors and Bloodthirsters are essentially the same demon type (both are based on Tolkien's Balrog). So they can be used interchangably.

The rest of the Demons don't have as close as a fit between D&D and Warhammer.

Its relatively easy to describe a Demon's appearance using Warhammer flavor, but give the Demon the abilities of a normal D&D Demon.

An alternative, is to go ahead and make up your own D&D stats for Warhammer Demons. So your demons will have both the appearance and the flavor of warhammer demons. If you do a search on the web, you can probably find a warhammer D&D 3e conversion for the Keeper of Secrets, Lord of Change, etc.

My suggestions:
Khorne... Balor
Slaanesh ... Succubus
Tzeentch ... Vrock
Nurgle ... Hezrou

[edit posted, sorry landed in wrong thread]. The info regarding the relationship to Warhammer is helpful to me. Thanks for the great replies in this thread :)

By the way, if I were a player in your campaign I'd probably be excited to go up against some Demodands. I'd expect that less than a demon or devil.

I'm not sure if you are looking for minis or not, so I know Reaper has a Frog god figure, which could be Nurgle, or any frog like demonic thing. Games Workshop I'm sure has figures to represent their gods, though I wouldn't buy them, even on a spendthrift day, they just charge too much.

Horus could be a human who ascended, or is that descended into a demon. Then there are the other fallen Primarchs from 40K.

A balor named Khorne;
and a vrock named Tzeentch.

WHAT? The lowly Bloodgod assigned double the HD of the Allmighty Lord of Change? I would pummel you mercilessly, if I could get my arms to stay in the same form for long enough!

...what would work for the god for the Chaos Dwarves? Or the patron of Warhammer's Dark Elves? Or the Skaven?

For the dark elves, it might be appropriate if you used the balor Khorne, masquerading as another being named Khaine...

The oinodaemon, leader of the NE fiends had a strong disease affinity... suitable for Nurgle.

I can't recall much about the chaos dwarves... maybe a demon with a metal or weapon affinity?

Thanks for the replies!

Well, I'm more or less trying to pretty much use existing demons instead of trying to create something new. Basically, I'm just using the Chaos God names for certain demons that sorta resemble the Chaos Daemon minis from Warhammer.

I may bulk up this individual demons w/ some class levels (thus the Vrock will be a bit tougher than the PCs expect). But, so far, I think I'll go w/ a Balor named Khorne, a Vrock named Tzeentch (w/ some spellcaster levels), & a Glabrezu named Slaanesh. I'm not sure who to use for Nurgle off the bat--I'd think there was/is a lesser slime/ooze demon in the service of Juiblex that would be feasible for Nurgle.

FYI, here's the WH daemon minis in question (Hopefully the images work):

Are you sure that Khorne looked like a Balor? His greater demon, the Bloodthirster sure as heck did but I don't remember what Khorn looked like. As a matter of fact, the only Chaos god I remember seeing a picture of is Nurgle since all Great Unclean Ones look like him. Most people equate the greater demons to looking like the sponsor chaos god. Perhaps you could make a Half-Fiend Minotaur to be a Keeper of Secrets (Slannesh Greater Demon). I haven't the foggiest idea about the Great Unclean One. I'd make sure to give it Ooze properties. You have to create Nurgle's Rot too. Basically if a PC catches that nasty disease they turn into a Plague Bearer (lesser demon) in one day's time.
