Demons, Devils, and Celestials

I thought too about using that "vile damage" from BoVD or not. But I tend to be too nice when relating to encounters and they end fighting things so easily (I have such little sense of strategy :o) that I came to the response of yes for this and for two other things:
-I didn't put so much monsters that make vile damage.
-They have a cleric in the group
So it won't be so difficult.
The idea of putting some corrupted creatures and using BoVD was also to give the feeling that really something evil was committed in his place, and the PC's can sense it because they have a sniffer in the group. If you don't know what a sniffer is it's a feat form the "Wheel of Time" RPG from where we use some feats and things (they are some feats quite interesting, like dreamer and things like that... but they cost twice, as two feats).Well, the sniffer can smell where bad things have ocurred (say, a murder, for example) and smell, simililarly as track, who has done it (well, this is very difficult but they can track them ocassionally).
So I tried to make feel them the "vileness" of the place by using some minor corrupted creatures.
BTW... I explained them that I've been thinking about demons needing to eat or not and gave them the conclusion that I've made them not needing it, but "half-anythings" yes, so they agreed of the demons being here so much time... but nobody told anything about the supposed "half-celestial" among them. That's good for me, for when they start thinking about it they will discover that is not logical... so it's not a half-celestial, but an erinyes, hehehe.
Bye! ;)

Of course, that presumes the cleric thinks to prepare consecrate, and is carrying around the silver dust required. Of course, since BoVD came out, that spell, hallow, and Fort saves have all become much more important.

A possibility that's been discussed in my group is doing something similar to the darkskull, but as a chalice and radiating hallow. I've been pestering the party cleric to make such a thing, especially since our DM looooves BoVD. A more economical choice would be a similar item that radiates consecrate, which would probably cost somewhere between 12-24k gp. Or, the party cleric could go into sacred exorcist, which is a reasonably nifty prestige class.

Well... we don't use material components usually (except for specifically and rare spells such as scrying or something like that, it's kind of a house rule) ;)
I've also thougth about an object similar to what you're telling, one that radiates consecrate... I've "hidden" it somewhere in the castle, so when they find it, and get a way to have it work they will find it a really useful item
I didn't think of a shape in particular but a chalice seems logical to me. I think that I'll borrow that idea if you don't mind ;)
And, why not, scrolls, there were some priests in the castle and they had a laaaarge library :)
A Sacred Exorcist? Well... our cleric doesn't go that way, I think... he is kind of tricky... well, the trickiest of the group. He isn't even worshipper of a good deity :D
Bye!!!;)

Bye!!!;)

So an evil deity then? Or a neutral one and he channels negitive energy? Or just a neutral one who channels positive energy?

If they channel negitive then they may take control of some of the undead (you mentioned them) and end up using the vile damage against some of your other creatures.

Then again, I may be reading too much into this.

Yeah, right, he's a worshipper of an evil deity (a water related god, actually), so he channels negative energy. And just this afternoon we were talking of him commanding some undead, and the like... Seems that it will be a nice way of getting out, since there is plenty of vile-damage-undead he can command ;)
I hope they will be aware of it.
Bye!!!

About the original question: can Devils etc. starve to death?

How about this; they can never actually die of such causes but they may be weakened by long periods without sustenance. It will be up to you how badly weakened they are after however long you have had them locked up. Perhaps the Celestial is so bad off it can barely walk and the PC's must protect it (rather than benefiting from its abilities) or maybe the demons have a little of the edge taken off of them as well as being in a blood lust (don't want to make it too easy on the group no do we ;) ). At any rate it should be really cool for the party to find these powerful beings who look nothing like what they imagined but rather like famine refugees: decrepit, gaunt faces, skin drawn tight over their frames, open sores, long patchy hair and so forth. Might even fool the PC's into thinking they are dealing with some sort of wierd undead instead of outsiders. And it makes captivity something an outsider would fear rather than just an annoyance.

Just my 2cp.
