When my wife and I bought our house ten years ago I dubbed the family/formal dinning room "The Gaming Room," I had a 4x8 table already built (we recently added a 1" grid to the table top with cloth under plastic so we could write on it with markers). The living room is closer to the kitchen and thus better suited for every day use (TV and such).
We use wooden TV trays for drinks, lap tops, and extra space.
The Gaming Room has two walls with selves on them, loaded down with our books, a group set and one of our players leaves his stuff there for weeks on end. The primary GM bought a good stereo a few years back just for the gaming room- I guess he was tired of the box we had and we have access to several hundred CDs (presently planning on getting an iPod so we don't ever have to change CDs).
Each player has an office chair that they either bought or was given to them as a gift.
Being a little embarressed at your gaming in front of your parents is cool, I know I fell a little self conscious about it my self with none players show up and lurk (seems they all do it during the climax of the campaign).
Allow them to watch, or even teach them to play. My brother and I taught our Mom years ago (AD&D) and that dispeled all the myths right there.
I have in the past used a garage, a car port, waited 'til the house was asleep and used the dinning room table, and also gamed at libraries.
Should you have a gaming store that will allow it, it could be a source for new players and GMs as well as watching others style and abilities. I suggest it for at least lurking purposes.
Good luck
