Detect Experience

I had a similiar experience in college. We finally perfected that "Detect Hot Babes" spell, so we could determine which bar to head to in the evenings (our divinations always seemed to fail us). Then we realized, what we REALLY needed was the "Detect Drunk Hot Babes" variant. It was a house-rule, definitely.

On a more serious d20 note, I allow Sense Motive to determine the overall "power" of a person, similar to the "grades" used in the detect line of spells.

Detect PC Glow

While detect experience is an important spell, as well as "Hot Babes", the all important spell is "Detect PC Glow"

If a comrade dies, or someone new joins the campaign, use of this spell is almost a necessity. Out of the crowd of people who want to join you on your adventures, you can cast this spell and know that the individual(s) who light-up are the ones you should bring into your party.

Player1: I ask the bar keep if anyone is looking for some work/adventure.

DM: Barkeep says "Yeah....I'll send some guys to your table in an hour. I know at least half a dozen who might be interested"

(In about an hour a group of 8 people come to your table and begin to introduce themselves and ask about your party)

Player2: I cast "Detect PC Glow"

DM: One person, a dwarven fighter, glows out of the group assembled in front of you.

Player1: Come forward dwarf. We pick you.

Needless to say, you've avoided potentially hours of role-playing, not liking the new character and passing him over, and/or getting into a fight with the new guy and having to kill him/her!

I created this spell because I hate those irritating and stingy "good roleplayers" that kiss DM a** and get the phat XP that I rightly deserve. Then they always waste their extra levels by taking levels of lame classes like ranger, bard, OR EVEN NPC CLASSES LIKE EXPERT AND ARISTOCRAT! You know they do it just to rub your nose in the fact that even though their character is two levels higher you can still completely smack them down in two rounds (one if hasted). What a terrible waste of XP that I could put better use to!!!

You may remove experience point rewards that the DM has earmarked in his notes for a fellow PC and add them to your own experience total. The maximum amount of experience points you may siphon in this manner are 100 times your character level per casting of this spell.

Special: This spell may only be cast by characters of chaotic neutral alignment. When recording this spell on your character sheet, you may record it as either "arcane mark" (src/wiz), "virtue" (clr), "mending" (brd), or "know direction" (drd) in order to fool people looking over your shoulder. However, if you do so, you must shout "HA! I fooled you. This spell is really STEAL ROLEPLAYING EXPERIENCE AWARD!" before casting the spell.
