On page 142 of the PHB, it states that the use of a spell-like ability requires concentration and provokes an AoO; and that the spell-like ability can be disrupted. That much is straight forward.
What confuses me is that on page 180 of the PHB, it states that spell-like abilities have no verbal, somatic or material components, nor do they require a focus, as they are activated mentally.
So then, how does one recognize and attempt to disrupt, via a readied dispel magic, provoking a concentration check etc. a spell-like ability when there is no outward sign that the ability is being used?
The rules say that someone using a spell-like ability provokes an AoO, but how would you as a DM describe it? In the case of an AoO provoked by moving through a threatened square, you could say something like "As the Ogre rushes past you, you see an opening to take a quick stab at his flank as he passes by."
However, in the case of an AoO provoked by something which as no outward sign that anything is happening do you say "Your opponent appears to do nothing out of the ordinary, yet you feel compelled to take a free shot at him anyway."?
Am I missing something? Any advice would be appreciated.
