Determining Encounter Level

The language is an ancient one called APL. The code I can't show exactly due to a lack of appropriate character set, but it's close to:
Code:
2×2@+/2*C÷2
Nobody's got a shorter implementation?

Whoa! American Programming Language, there's a term from out of my childhood! I seem to recall a novel in the Hell's Point series that claimed that Hell used to use that language, but that some fates are too cruel even for that warm place...

Well, its a language that I never heard of before Davin mentioned APL (and I didn't know the acronym until just now). Just how old is it?

Actually, that's not the correct acronym. :) And it's old -- older than almost everything else around -- COBOL, Fortran, and Smalltalk [barely] are older languages you might know. It's been around since 1969.

I haven't read that book series, but it has been mentioned in other books and movies hanging around. It was a really popular language back in the 70's.
