D&D 5E Devious Encounters

I had lone a kobold once top a rise in front of the pc's holding two coconut halves ala Monty Python. It saw them, "Eeeped!" rather loudly and ran away.

Over the course of several hours they'd catch glimpses of this kobald as it ran ever deeper into the woods. They even determined it was leading them into a trap, and they were brainstorming about thwarting said trap...

... as they blundered into a carefully hidden pit trap.

I’m a fan of devious encounters that aren’t so much “gotchas,” but ones that reward smart play. Stuff like a big monster behind a gate that shuts behind anyone charging in recklessly, or ones that present a puzzle to be solved, like putting the big bad right there behind an obvious gauntlet of traps.

My brother, on the other hand, prefers deceit and misdirection, like the time he had us all running from a minotaur that wasn’t there in a labyrinth that was only 30’ in diameter.
