DEX penalties and Sneak Attack

kengar

First Post
Here's a question that came up the other day and I wasn't sure how to answer it. Let's say a druid successfully casts Entangle on a foe, thereby giving it a -4 to effective DEX. If that eliminates any DEX bonus the foe had to AC -DEX 14 (+2) to DEX 10 (+0)- could a Rogue with a missle weapon Sneak Attack the Entangled foe (assuming he was within 30')?

On the one hand it sounds like it would work, but I am not sure that's how the rules intended the whole "target denied their Dexterity bonus to AC" aspect of S.A. Any thoughts?

Entangle isn't denying the persons DEX... just reducing it.

So, I would rule that this would not help a rogue with his sneak attack.

I will add my agreement with everyone else. Entangle does not deny anyone their dex bonus to AC, it just lowers their effective dex while entangled. You can see the differance this way. If someone with an 18 dex is entangled, his effective dex is still 14 and he still gets a +2 dex bonus to his AC. No sneak attack. If this same character was denied his dex bonus to AC, he would get no dex bonus to his AC at all and the rogue could sneak attack him.

Remember, sneak attack works when someone would be denied their dex bonus to AC, whether they actually have a dex bonus or not. Someone with a dex of 8 has a dex penalty. But if they are in a situation where they would be denied their dex bonus to AC, even though they don't have one, they still can get sneak attacked.

Incidentally, since were talking about editing posts, what the hell is up with you and question marks?

Hey, can I help it if my fingers keep slipping to that SHIFT PLUS sign.

(Actually, that would make you wonder, wouldn't it?)
