Diabetes research

2) I'm a type one diabetic myself, and have had the disease for 13 years. I'm growing rapidly jaded by the research approaches that are getting the most funding, and I'm tired of false hope that's wrapped up in the guise of anything but.
Yeah, I guess I can see that. I guess the 24 hour news channels have just gotten me to the point where I don't hold news people to any sort of real standard anymore - its safer to assume they don't know enough about what they're talking about. "Jaded" seems to be their whole business. :]

And as for the diabetics with AIDS. Nothing has been published looking at it, but it's an interesting question. But it's a case of saving the city from a mongol horde by burning it to the ground.
Thankee. I really wasn't thinking about it as a cure, so much as that there might be certain experiments scientists are doing with diabetics that involve inducing immune deficiency that might be unnecessary if they could look at data from diabetics that already have HIV, instead. But, I wouldn't mind if one of you biology genius types could whip out a custom engineered HIV to cure the thing, either. ;)

P.S. Since before I've harassed you in this thread, it has occurred to me that I owe you an apology of sorts. You may not remember - I'm sure meeting me didn't just completely change your life :D - but at a NC Gameday last year I mentioned you resembled (strongly  ) a former member of our gaming group, and then sort of stupidly insinuated that you might be gay, because he is. I hope you've realized by now from my posts on here that I don't consider being gay to be an insult - just a perfectly acceptable choice - so it didn't occur to me until after I'd said it what a jacka__ I sounded like. And it didn't help that some women (Clueless, in this case) make me goofy (goofier?) when I'm around them - like some sort of field effect. :o And, I run my mouth too damned much. Sorry. :heh:

how much towards full blown AIDS you'd need to be before you ended up with the diabetes possibly reversing. Can't say for sure.

insulin dependent diabetic here too... since april 1987.

AIDS has so many other confounders... opportunistic infections like M. avium and M. tuberculosis and... so on... they(the other infections) are included in the definition of AIDS... but not HIV infection. AIDS being the end stage of the illness.

poorly controlled diabetics are also at a higher risk for some opportunistic infections. that is why a TST skin conversion is lower for someone with diabetes than one without. an obvious other infection is the flu. and why flu shots are recommended annually for diabetics.

and why vaccinations are a good idea for other preventable diseases.

and diet and exercise. and monitoring your blood sugar. and regular checkups. and...

can't say that the article has done anything for me. but i've been at it a while. if i were newly diagnosed perhaps it would mean something.

Ah yes, now I remember you :)

I just sort of shrugged at that comment and forgot about it, and I never caught the gay insinuation. Though I'm sure Clueless would have tormented me about it the rest of the day if she had heard it. *chuckle*

Don't worry regarding this thread, it's pretty damn hard for me to take something personal over text :)
