I buy a new set everytime I start a new character...call it superstition. For me it is more like starting fresh.

Thats about what my wife does, although she has gotten better about it. I tend to only get them when she says "ooooh...you really need some of those!"

When we went to Dragon Con for the last few years and Chessex had booth we would wind up with at least 4 sets. Hey, it could be worse, she could do it with Jewelry.

Between the two of us I don't know what it works out to but I would say about 4-6 sets a year for the last 4 years.

I do not buy sets of dice as much as I buy individual types of dice. Back when I was playing Shadowrun, I accumulated quite a few d6s. Then, I started a wizard so I thought it would be nice to have enough d4s so I could roll all my magic missile dice at once. Now I am playing a cleric and I felt the need to aquire several d8s. That is the way it goes. I only have one d12, though. I guess the d12 just doesn't get that much love nowadays.

The last dice I bought were a few d8s that I needed. Last set was a Christmas gift from my DM. He'd also gotten at least one other player a new set of dice. Other than that, it's if I find some cool-looking ones at the Chessex booth at Dragoncon.

I've bought a couple of sets for myself, and a set for my wife, since 3E came out. I'd been playing WoD for a couple years before that, and noticed that all my non-d10s were looking a bit dated and "eighties". Oh, I picked up a set of prism dice, recently, on a whim, too.

I used to be really, really bad about getting dice. It was almost a set a week. Then someone stole pretty much all my dice, a couple hundred. I know who, but can't prove it. Anyway, that was a bit disheartening and I've never really felt the call of the dice bag again.

I bought a couple sets of ultra-oldschool 70s-style TSR dice within the last year or so, but those were purely for nostalgia's sake and I haven't actually used them (or even taken them out of the plastic bags they came in). Prior to that, the last non-standard-d6 dice I bought were in 1992, a pair of percentile dice including one of those "new-fangled" d10s numbered 00-90 and a pair of d6s with skulls in place of 1s. My last set of full polyhedrals (d4, d8, etc.) was purchased sometime well before that, probably around 1989-90. As long as they hold up I don't see any reason to buy any more (and *knock on wood* they seem to be holding up fine -- no chips or cracks). I must admit my dice bag (which, IIRC, dates to around 1985 or 86) is looking pretty shabby and threadbare, though.

Other. I also buy new dice whenever I start up a new character. Not a superstition, I like to get dice that represent my character, just like I get a new fig. It helps me get into character.
