D&D General Did 5e 2024 Not meet the economic goals set, and if not, why not?

I can see them having painted themselves into a corner with DDB and maybe some other stuff by the time they would want to release a 6e, but 5e is only perpetual as long as it keeps selling well
IT is not insurmountable, but they have to factor a software project into any release of a version of D&D that has significant changes to the class structure or elements of the base game, and it is much harder to schedule big software projects.
Their best bet would be to rebuild D&DBeyond so that it is eventually system agnostic under the hood. The investment case for that may be a hard sell at senior management though.
