Agreed, but the current evidence doesn't seem to indicate that it is being revised. I'd meet my players half way and give them a bonus (+10 or +20, whatever seems reasonable) to Escape Artist checks. This would help define what it can be used for (underwater, vs movement restricting spells, and anything needing an Escape Artist check) without making it too powerful.
It sounds like your players are strong proponents of this spell working to prevent them from being grappled, and thus I see this is a half-way solution between your two positions.
